Job description
We’re looking for a freshwater ecological Environmental Monitoring Officer to work as part of Analysis & Reporting team to help carry out and deliver our environmental monitoring and investigations programme. The role is a combination of field and office-based work which includes ecological survey work, laboratory analysis of ecological samples, data analysis and interpretation and reporting.
This job provides a good foundation for development of freshwater ecological and water quality skills and comes with the possibility of a graduate learning opportunity and career progression.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
The Analysis & Reporting team are passionate about the freshwater environment and seek to deliver excellent environmental outcomes through our work by providing freshwater ecological and water quality data to support our environmental projects. We deliver a vital service that underpins much of the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities.
Experience/skills required
We are seeking someone who shares our passion for the environment and who has an appetite to develop their skills to become an experienced freshwater ecologist. You’ll be qualified to a higher education level in a relevant discipline. You will preferably have:
  • studied biology or environmental science.
  • had some field-based survey experience, but not essential.
  • had some experience of data analysis and interpretation.
  • had some experience of report writing.

Other key requirements for this job include good communication skills, attention to detail, proficiency in word, excel and database management, analysis & problem solving. You must possess a full driving licence and be competent to drive in the UK and be able to swim.
