Job description

Position Overview

The position responsibilities include technical work in preparing, reviewing and/or field inspecting engineering drawings, maps, stormwater reports, traffic studies and other data for public works projects, subdivisions, and / or commercial site plans. Work may involve preparing precise drawings and maps from engineering and survey notes using a computerized aided design program. Data is collected, generated, and disseminated for private, commercial and public works construction projects. Work is performed with independence of judgment and action. Work will include field investigations, problem solving, coordination with and guidance to field construction crews.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare street plans, profiles, and cross sections for the grading, paving and curbing of county roads, avenue, boulevards, sidewalks, and traffic ways, utilizing AutoCAD computer software.
  • Perform field surveys, reduce survey field notes, and plot preliminary drawings, including property lines and existing utilities such as water mains, gas mains, underground electrical, and telephone conduits, steam lines, sanitary laterals, and storm sanitary sewers.
  • Research various types of data forms including deed descriptions and recorded plats; locate information and data for engineering staff, utility company representatives, property owners and the public.
  • Review subdivision lot grading and drainage for new residential structures, lot grading and drainage field inspections for new residential structures pending occupancy, field inspections and evaluations as needed to resolve subdivision drainage issues, and provide plan review support to the Assistant County Engineer.
  • Additional duties include but are not limited to, ADA compliance reviews and inspections for public improvements (sidewalks, ramps, etc.), ADEM stormwater reviews and inspection reports, right-of-way and easement record searches, private sewer inspections and attending or leading public informational meetings.
  • Employee will be expected to perform technical writing tasks, such as memorandums and inspection reports.
  • Employee will be responsible for internal coordination with two departments, Madison County Engineering and Building Inspection.
  • This position also requires routine verbal and email coordination with engineers, contractors, and property owners.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • A combination of education and experience can substitute the bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • At minimum, the applicant must have a high school diploma or GED with five (5) years of technical field experience related to engineering and/or construction, and the experience should be progressive to show advancement in knowledge and responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Must have knowledge of fundamental math and engineering principles or the technical experience equivalent as needed to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and topographic maps.
  • This position requires basic computer and software skills to complete work tasks, such as use of Microsoft Office and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically capable of working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Vision ability must be a to operate a vehicle and use computers and related equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • This position requires the physical ability to lift 50 lbs.
Certifications or Licenses Required:
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable for Madison County automobile insurance coverage.
Work Schedule:
  • 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
  • Monday - Friday
