Join GSK’s Engineering Apprentice Programme – Irvine UK, 2023: Help us get ahead of disease together
A GSK apprenticeship gives you the chance to earn while you learn. This Engineering apprenticeship lasts for four years and and is designed to create the engineers of the future. As an engineering apprentice, you will have the opportunity to develop mechanical, electrical & instrumentation or control & automation skills.
You will learn how to maintain production equipment - carrying out routine maintenance, diagnosing and resolving breakdowns as well as helping to design, install and test new equipment. It offers you the chance to study towards nationally recognised qualifications while gaining valuable, paid work experience.
We are looking for motivated individuals with a willingness and enthusiasm to learn, who are excited to develop practical engineering and problems solving skills. No prior experience is required as you will be given full training.
If you successfully complete your apprenticeship and demonstrate the qualities we are looking for, you may be offered the opportunity to go on to further education including degree.

On our 4-year programme you’ll receive tailored on-the-job training from industry experts from day one combined with early responsibility to help you to develop and progress.
You’ll be working towards an Engineering Technician qualification through online university-led learning sessions and activities.
If you are offered a role; you will have a buddy or a mentor who will help you to prepare for joining GSK and will be there to offer support and guidance throughout your apprenticeship.

Irvine is a Penicillin Manufacturing site. Please consider this if you are allergic to beta-lactam penicillin.
Education required:
Must have/be predicted to achieve a minimum of five Scottish National 5s at grade A-C (or five Standard grades at grades 1-3). Must include Maths at B or above, a Science subject and English at C or above.
Duration: 4 years
Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

This Apprenticeship is based at our Irvine site. Our Irvine facility is a primary pharmaceutical manufacturing facility and is leading the way on renewable energy use.
Ahead together with tailored training and career development
As an apprentice at GSK Irvine, you will develop practical skills which will enable you to become a key member of our Engineering team – helping to ensure we can maintain the supply of our life-saving medicines for our patients.
You will attend college where you will work towards nationally recognised qualifications including an HNC in Engineering.
Throughout your apprenticeship you will be supported by your line manager, an early talent programme manager as well as an apprentice buddy.
What will you do?
You will:
- Learn how to maintain equipment and carry out routine maintenance
- Fault find, diagnose & resolve breakdowns
- Work on energy and sustainability projects.
- Recommend & action improvements
- Help install and test new equipment.
- Learn business skills with other apprentices
- Complete community projects as part of a team
