The Town of Yarmouth Fire Department is accepting applications for a full-time Firefighter/Engineer.
About Yarmouth Fire Department
The Yarmouth Fire Department is dedicated to fire prevention and the protection of the citizens of Yarmouth. Our town's Fire Department has a history dating back to 1837 and has been protecting and educating the population of Yarmouth ever since. Steeped in a rich costal history, we proudly protect our community well past the borders of the town proper.
We are a composite fire department consisting of volunteer and career firefighters. Ten staff make up the career side consisting of a chief, four platoon chiefs, four firefighters/engineers as well as a fire inspector who is the third person on the engine as available.
Position Summary
The Firefighter/Engineer position is an operational position within the Yarmouth Fire Department’s team. It includes but is not limited:
- Drive fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles
- Put out fires using water hoses, fire extinguishers, and water pumps
- Find and rescue victims in burning buildings or in other emergency situations
- Treat sick or injured people
- Prepare written reports on emergency incidents
- Clean and maintain equipment
- Conduct drills and physical fitness training
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire department property
- Carrying out specific orders and directions received from senior officers
- Responds to emergencies including but not limited to fires, rescues, public assistance, emergency medical, and spills/leaks of hazardous materials
- Drives and operates firefighting and emergency equipment as assigned
- Conducts fire prevention inspections and public education programs/activities as assigned
- Completes and submits various reports and records as required
- Attends on-duty training sessions and off-site training courses as necessary
- Maintains equipment in accordance with organizational policies and procedures
- Responsible for workplace safety as outline in the NS Occupational Health and Safety Act and organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Other duties as assigned as appropriate to the function and responsibilities of the position
Application Requirements
- 19 years of age or older
- Nova Scotia class 3 license (or equivalent from another province)
- High School completion certificate or equivalent
- Must complete a criminal record check as well as a vulnerable sector check (upon request)
- Provide a drivers abstract (upon request)
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing (bilingual is an asset)
- Experience working within a unionized environment is an asset
- Combination of education and experience will be considered
- Must live within or be willing to move to within 40 minutes of the fire hall (under normal driving conditions)
Required Certification (Or equivalents as reviewed and determined by the Fire Chief)
- Incident Command System (ICS) – Level 100
- NFPA 1001 Level 1 Firefighter
- Certificate pump course as per NFPA 1002 Standard on Fire Apparatus Driver Operator Professional Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Firefighter experience
- NFPA 1001 Level II Firefighter
- Additional education
- Trade apprenticeship or certification
- Working experience
- NFPA 1521, Standard for Fire Department Safety Officer – Incident Safety
- Incident Command System (ICS) – Level 200
Work Schedule
Required to work flexible hours and/or work on a 24-hour shift; availability to meet with other department obligations outside the regular work schedule is required.
Physical/Environment Demands
- Physical work is required; therefore, incumbent must be physically capable of lifting, carrying, or performing any function that may be required at an emergency scene
- Extended working periods without rest and sleep
- Extended working period in extreme and variable weather conditions and hazardous environments.
Compensation
Salary and benefits as per collective agreement with Yarmouth Firefighters Association – Local Union No. 2094.
