Job description
:
Serves as an engineer of generators, transformers, high voltage electrical equipment, and immediate ancillary systems for the Coal, Gas and Hydro fleets. May possess and use specialized knowledge/expertise in one or more areas of major electrical equipment systems or component(s), serving as PO’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) for selected equipment and/or systems. Performs and directs studies to evaluate the current state of the equipment, the effects of modifications, deterioration, deletions, and additions to major systems and equipment. As work needs dictate, perform cross-discipline engineering work to optimize performance. Assists production units in resolution of equipment and system problems including troubleshooting problem areas as requested. Directs or conducts technical monitoring, analysis, evaluation, and investigation of high voltage electrical equipment. Initiates improvements, repairs, maintenance, modification, and retrofit activity to optimize achievement of plant business plan objectives.
Identifies deviations of electrical equipment performance, determines root causes, and recommends the optimum solution for correcting the problem. Troubleshoots problems not resolved by routine maintenance or surveillance activities. Determines whether identified problems exist in other systems or units at the plant and replicates solutions, including informing engineers at other plants which can benefit.
Prepares and reviews specifications, cost benefit ratios, and estimates covering installation of new equipment or upgrading of present equipment. Furnishes engineering data and prepares job orders and work orders to cover capitalized expenditures or retirements. Represents Engineering on Joint Project Teams.
Serve as responsible engineer for assigned projects, including large, cross-discipline, and more complex projects. Duties include leading the project team, establishing, and accomplishing valid requirements, monitoring all phases of project performance, approving project changes within approved limits, and conducting lessons learned reviews at project completion.

Supervision Received:
Supervision and guidance is provided by the engineering manager. Supervision is generally limited to overall objectives, general guidelines and policy, and work priorities with guidance provided for highly specialized tasks. The successful candidate plans and executes the work with minimal supervision.
Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific):
Proficient in site/field engineering for Coal, Gas, Hydro Power Plant Systems and Equipment; Plant Operations and Maintenance; Industry Standards and Codes; Plan and direct testing; Spreadsheets, Graphics Software; Problem Solving & Analysis, i.e. Root Cause, FMEA/EMEA, Fault Tree, Weibull, etc.; Project Management, Construction Processes, Teamwork; Communication and Interpersonal; Initiative. Relay and/or transformer experience.
Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard):
Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements
Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school.
Full competence as a System Engineer as demonstrated by several years’ experience at senior level as a System Engineer or Discipline Engineer.
License as a Professional Engineer is highly desirable
