The role: A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineering Apprentice to join the Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Maintenance Team based at our Thanckes OFD (Oil Fuel Depot), at Torpoint in Cornwall.
Although the successful candidate will be based at Thanckes, the apprenticeship will also gain experience around working across the other OPA Depots in England, located at Gosport in Hampshire and the OPA facility at Plumley in Cheshire.
Significant travel with overnight stays to other sites will be required, therefore a full (preferably clean) driving licence is essential for this role.
The successful candidate will initially be enrolled on a 3-year Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technicians (MOET) Level 3 apprenticeship programme with the specialism being Electrical, Control & Instrumentation.
The Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technicians Apprenticeship Program is designed to develop your expertise across a breadth of operational and technical areas of the business. Your plant based training program is supported by the nationally recognised apprentice standard structure (Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology and NVQ 3 in both Electrical & Instrumentation). We support the apprentice standard with all the relevant technical certificates to enable the apprentices to develop their skills in all aspects of Electrical and Instrumentation engineering. You will not only gain valuable skills and knowledge around Engineering, but you will also learn all aspects about working within a COMAH Bulk Liquid Operations Site. In the area of Process Safety, you will gain valuable insights into all aspects Process Safety study techniques, COMAH requirements, Human Factors and Functional Safety. We provide a positive environment together with a strong safety and team working culture. The programme is run in conjunction with the CATCH Training Facility in Stallingborough, Grimsby.
The first year (30 weeks) will be based at CATCH Training facility in Stallingborough. This consists of five days a week Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. Within year one at CATCH the successful candidate will study a Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology (Electrical Engineering Maintenance) around a term time framework with the successful candidate required to attend college over a number of weeks.
Years two, three are primarily based at the OFD Thanckes under a mentorship programme, to complete NVQ3 in both Electrical & Instrumentation.
Our Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineering Apprenticeship Program will ensure a well-rounded exposure to all of these areas of Engineering, and we will provide you with the opportunity to make a genuine impact in a company with a pioneering spirit.
Responsibilities;
Here are some of the tasks that the successful candidate will be doing;
Routine inspection maintenance and electrical repair of fuel storage plant and equipment,
Carry out planned maintenance activities and defect rectification efficiently,
Overhauling and replacing parts according to schedule,
Fit and assembly of electrical systems making use of appropriate machinery/hand tools,
Be responsible for the filling out of job sheets, planned maintenance cards etc,
Carry out PPM and extra work requirements in adherence to set engineering standards in accordance with HASAWA requirements.
Understand a full range of electrical tasks including some of the following: Maintenance of LV distribution system, small power and lighting, emergency lighting and fire alarm systems, hazardous area equipment and connections, understanding of SCADA or DCS system, understanding of automatic tank gauging systems.
The candidate; We are looking for candidates who are hardworking, reliable, trustworthy and keen to learn and develop themselves within the Engineering and the Bulk Liquid Storage Industry. You need to be able to demonstrate good communication and problem solving skills and be able to work as part of a team.
You must have minimum qualifications of 3 GCSEs at A* - C (9-4) Grades including English and Mathematics based subjects or equivalent.

Remuneration; The starting salary is £12,220 per year (dependant on age raising to £21,070 in the final year of the apprenticeship). The hours during years 2 & 3 at the Depot are 07.30 to 15.30 Monday to Thursday, 07.30 to 15.00 Friday (37 hours per week. Once you are fully trained, qualified and have gained sufficient experience, your salary will increase through the organisations pay grades and spines structure.
Progression; Whilst this vacancy is for an Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Apprentice based at our Thanckes Depot, during and after your apprenticeship the individual will also opportunities to develop their careers across other aspects of the OPA business (Project Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Process Safety Engineer etc).
