Supporting children, young people and their families is crucial to educational success.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Education Welfare Service to work within a team fulfilling the statutory function and responsibilities in relation to school attendance. To safeguard the interests of all children, reduce educational neglect, focusing on both attendance and welfare, you will be working with young people, schools, parents/carers, and any other relevant agencies involved with the family. You will also be expected to complete targeting support meetings focused on persistent and severe absence and provide clear advice and guidance. There will also be an opportunity to develop a range of additional skills around traded services, child performance, child employment and promoting and securing attendance within established education processes throughout the city.

We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable professionals who will have the opportunity to be part of this statutory, yet creative and motivated service. It is essential that you can work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team and have excellent time management skills.

Whilst continuing to support and promote improved attendance across the city, you will need to have a commitment and the necessary skills to ensure all children and young people are able to access the educational opportunities available to them.

  • You will need a good knowledge of the legal framework in relation to school attendance/statutory guidance/regulations and knowledge of childcare legislation and working guidance, e.g. Children Act 1989 & 2004 & Working Together 2018, Keeping Children Safe In Education 2022 and a clear understanding of Child Protection procedures and processes.
  • Be accountable for your own workload and case recording.
  • Be creative and able to cope with high workflow and managing several issues at once & have excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Enjoy working in a busy team atmosphere & be able to cope with competing demands and prioritise risk for children and families.
  • Have excellent IT skills being able to use Excel, Teams, Word, Outlook other IT data bases and navigate from one to the other with ease.
  • Have excellent accurate written skills, able to write reports, statements for court and present evidence concisely.
  • Be familiar with the principles of restorative practice and keen to develop an awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences and the impact of trauma.

  • This post requires an Enhanced/Standard DBS check.
  • A DBS check may be required for this role

  • Please note the salary quoted is based on full time hours (37 hours).
