Job description
Who are we and what do we do?
Yandell Publishing has a stable of market-leading magazines, directories and annuals that are loved and valued by both our readers and advertisers. Despite being in business for over 36 years, the company never stands still with media portfolios that combine a brilliant mix of print and online, topped off with events that are second to none.
Our primary markets include the meat and wider food industries where we have earned a trusted reputation for quality and innovation.
The Meat Management and Food Management Today magazines are the leading titles in their sectors, producing thought-provoking content about one of the country’s biggest industries. From interviewing a top food executive to producing a feature about a manufacturer or an independent retailer, the role involves lots of variety.
About this role
As an editorial assistant you will be a motivated individual covering our B2B magazines, directories, annuals, websites and events serving the food and meat industry.
You will be writing news stories and features for the print magazines and their websites, subbing pages, creating newsletters, using social media, researching, attending events, updating databases/listings for our directories and chasing people over the phone.... it's a real mixed bag with plenty of diversity. You’ll certainly never be stuck for something to do and, from time to time, may even find yourself helping with other titles across the business if the need arises.
The successful candidate will report to the editor and form an in-house editorial team of two people, supported by freelance contributors, and working alongside our in-house design, production and sales teams.
This role is based at our HQ in Milton Keynes and there is a company-wide policy that allows staff to work one day a week at home, should they wish to, following the initial probation period. But this is primarily an office-based role which is especially important to help with training and mentoring.
About you
If you have a talent for writing, editing and admin… if you love magazines, the web, social media, and content creation, we want to talk to you.
It goes without saying, that in an editorial environment we’re looking for a motivated individual who has excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and is a strong communicator. Publishing / journalistic experience is an advantage, but a high standard of written English is essential.
If you’ve got a blog, portfolio, had journalistic work experience etc., this is definitely going to aid your application. So make sure you include this with your application and any other examples of your writing / content creation.
What can we offer?
Yandell Publishing has a small but brilliant team of people and you’ll be joining a talented and friendly group. You’ll be learning from experienced media professionals and have the support and chance to maximise your skills and take your career to the next level.
This might be a more junior position, but you will have a ton of opportunity. This is not about making people cups of tea and being a goffer; you will be writing and subbing content from the word ‘go’ and being shown the ropes so you can make your own contribution and develop ‘on the job’.
There is a generous holiday package offered on top of public holidays, early finish on Fridays, and staff socials.
We also want to shout about the fact that the company has many long-standing employees, which we like to think tells its own story.
If you’re ready to work hard in a busy and demanding environment where you can help produce first class media, then apply today. And if you have any questions let us know.
Please include a covering letter: Alongside your CV, we would like you to include a covering letter outlining the reasons for the application and why you're the person we're looking for. Applications that do not include a covering letter will not be accepted. Also, don’t forget to send examples of any editorial / written work (published, blogs, etc) you have.
Tip: You can attach a cover letter during the Indeed application process at the 'review your application' stage under 'supporting documents'. This can also be used to upload any examples of your work.
Please note we will only be contacting candidates successful in obtaining an interview.
