Your role: Times Media is looking for an editor to grow its personal finance e-commerce initiative, Times Money Mentor. This editor must have an extensive knowledge of personal finance, a dedication to creating high quality service journalism, and an understanding of the competitive e-commerce space. They will be responsible for leading a team of writers and freelancers and work cross-functionally across Times Media to achieve the goal of building the site’s audience and growing its revenue, whilst ensuring that The Times brand’s high standards of journalism is consistently maintained.
Working closely with the head of Times Money Mentor, the editor will be responsible for commissioning, editing and publishing personal finance content and delivering on the business’ strategic goals.

Day to day you will:

  • Determine the content strategy for Times Money Mentor to deliver the next stage of growth for our personal finance e-commerce business.

  • Build and manage a team of freelancers, staff writers, and editors,, crafting high-quality service journalism that helps readers navigate every aspect of their financial lives.

  • Assign and edit personal finance articles, including explainers and best-buy lists, alongside our independent data providers, to build our SEO-driven articles library and evergreen content.

  • Understand what content performs well by maintaining constant awareness of site strategy and performance including traffic, engagement and revenue, using this knowledge to steer future strategy and content tests.

  • Maintain a close knowledge of the content archive in order to know what features need updating and when, according to news agenda as well as calendar.

  • Work with our affiliate team on pitches for potential e-commerce partnerships around high-performing content.

  • Liaise with our commercial solutions team on potential advertising campaigns to ensure successful rollout of client based projects across editorial.

  • Collaborate with production colleagues in design, pictures and sub-editing on digital elements that enhance written features.

  • Commission exclusive videos, polls and interactive graphics to engage our digital audience.

  • Help devise and oversee big quarterly projects such as the ISA Guide, Cost Of Living supplement, and The Times Money Mentor Annual Awards.

  • Ensure growth and engagement of the newsletter subscriber base and edit the newsletter to showcase the best of the week’s content, as well as curated partner offers and deals from e-commerce affiliate partners.

  • Work closely with our compliance partner to ensure FCA rules and guidelines are closely followed in all our content.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Experience working as an editor in a digital environment, preferably at a national newspaper or media company.

  • Robust understanding of the personal finance e-commerce space.

  • Experience in and a demonstrable passion for personal finance service journalism with good contacts in the industry.

  • Experience working on news, commercial and evergreen content.

  • Deep understanding of SEO and keyword targeting, and how it can be used to effectively grow audiences.

  • An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy.

  • An understanding of how audience data supports commissioning and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines.

  • Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to solve problems and negotiate positive outcomes.

  • Can balance editorial and business needs and has a clear vision on how we can achieve the goals of growing revenue and audience

  • Flexible and adaptable and willing to jump in and help with day-to-day responsibilities that come with a small but nimble team.

  • Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance within the regulated financial sector.
