Editor, Marlburian Club Magazine
Part-time job running the Marlburian Club magazine for Old Marlburians. “A magazine for OMs by OMs".
The magazine is 114-pages long and includes, amongst other things, regular features, articles about OMs written by OMs, College and Club updates and sports. It is a highly regarded publication by our membership and is consistently listed as the top benefit when OMs are surveyed, including younger OMs which the Club is keen to add more benefit to.
Following over eight years in the role, Catherine Brumwell has decided to step down as Editor and so we are now looking for a new Old Marlburian to became the new Editor of the magazine. They need to be able to bridge all types of Marlburians to create a balanced magazine that is accessible to all members. The right OM for this role will need a keen eye for detail and modern design, write with passion about our community, with the right level of tact and diplomacy to manage all stakeholders.
The work flow peaks and troughs during the year, but most of the work happens during term time. In January, you and the Editorial Board decide the content for the next year and then you commission the articles through February. Through April, May and June the flat plan is finalised and everything is gathered (the words, high-quality images and any other content) and the pieces are proofed by yourself and have the house-style put on. They then go to a professional proof-reader for a final check before being handed to the wonderful designer.
Over the summer holidays, there is a little bit of work as final pieces need to be handed in and you are available to answer any questions the designer may have. In September, any last bits are handed in and then the proofs start coming back from the designer. Over the next month, they are checked by you, the Development Office and once more by the professional proof-reader. By early/mid-October, the publication is signed off so that it lands on doorsteps late October/early November.
While the magazine is very much the work of the Editor and the designer, there is a lot of support from the Development Office. They gather a lot of the information, help find writers and keep you abreast of things happening within the Club and with OMs.
As part of the role, you are co-opted on the Marlburian Club Committee, meaning you not only know everything that is going on but you are also integral in the decision making of Club affairs. It is a lovely addition to this terrific role.
