Full Time London, England 76378 - 48200 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We're now looking for a Deputy Opinion Editor to support the Opinion Editor and Executive Editor (Opinion) in editing the Opinion pages both online and in print.

You'll be working on our coverage of the most high-profile national and global issues, but also stories which are off the main news agenda, covering all aspects of the human experience. And whatever the issue, we're also looking for new voices, new perspectives, and new insights.

About the Role

  • Commission and edit opinion pieces from columnists and contributors in an intelligent, original and news-reactive manner
  • Deputise and run the section efficiently during the Editors' absences
  • Generate agenda-setting ideas for opinion and demonstrate the ability to commission a range of writers, from world-renowned cultural and political figures to subject specialists and less frequently heard voices
  • Make informed decisions about unsolicited offers based on content, quality and provenance
  • Nurture good working relationships with existing contributors and build relationships with new opinion writers

About You

  • Experience working in a senior role on a national or other major newspaper, website or magazine
  • Proven-track record of editing & commissioning for web and print
  • Clear vision of the purpose and aims of Guardian opinion
  • Wide knowledge of and interest in current affairs, domestic and international
  • Familiarity with issues that prompt debate among our readers
  • Ideally, you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role and to cover under-reported stories

We actively encourage applications from candidates who are BAME or from other groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

We value and respect all differences (seen and unseen) in all people at the Guardian. We aspire to have inclusive working experiences and an environment that reflects the audience we serve, where our people have equal access to career development opportunities, their voices are heard and can contribute to our future.

How to apply

To apply, please upload your latest CV and a cover letter which outlines why you'd love to take on this role, and why you're a great match for what we're looking for.

Job Share applications are welcome. If you are keen to apply jointly with someone else as a Job Share, you should make a single application and combine your CVs into one document.

The closing date for applications is Thursday 10th August 2023.

All roles at the Guardian are open for everybody to apply. It is important to us that you feel supported and comfortable throughout your recruitment process, in order to perform your best. Please let us know if there are any changes we could make to the application process to make it easier and more comfortable for you. Contact Sean Brinkley ([email protected]) so we can work with you to support you throughout your application.
