The Managing Editor supports the editorial/content team within Fred Hutch’s Marketing & Communications Department to lead the development and production of compelling stories and website content as part of an integrated content strategy.
This role reports to the Senior Director of Content Strategy and will oversee a team of writers.
- Lead editorial planning and manage development of Hutch News stories (assign, edit, oversee production and distribution)
- Oversee other content and web content including, but not limited to, disease & treatment content, featured research profiles, provider profiles, conferences
- Triage, assign and manage execution of incoming M&C writing requests for projects with external audiences
- Supervise four staff writers
- Assign and manage freelance writers, as needed
- Develop content strategy and lead content development for special projects
- Oversee development and production of monthly email newsletter(s)
- Lead key meetings:
- Editorial meetings
- Regular 1:1 check-ins with four direct reports (2/month)
- Participate in key meetings:
- Service Line meetings (5/month)
- DEI Core & MarComm (1/month)
- Work with design/UX, analytics, media relations, social media, writing and marketing teammates to ensure strategic alignment of content, and conceptualize and develop written and multimedia content across digital and print channels
- Develop strong collaborative relationships with colleagues across the Fred Hutch’s clinical care and scientific divisions and administrative departments
- Consult with the migration of content from legacy websites to Fred Hutch website, and ongoing evolution of organization website
- Monitor science and cancer-related news to understand national, international topics, trends
- Maintain the Fred Hutch Writing Style Guide, including thorough knowledge of AP Style
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information, such as protected health information
- Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of writing/editing experience, content strategy; health care marketing preferred
- Demonstrated expertise in substantive editing and collaboration with writers and other content producers
- Experience partnering and leading within a multifunctional organization, interacting with diverse stakeholders and managing competing priorities in line with strategic objectives
- Knowledge of content management systems, such as Adobe Experience Manager or Drupal
- Proficiency in search engine optimization best practices
- Understanding of web content UX best practices
