Job purpose
This role is responsible for leading the compliance team for the whole of the National Distribution function to ensure that the company’s logistics operations comply with all road haulage legislation and driver legislation in the UK. This is a pivotal role in ensuring the Distribution teams adhere to compliance standards and improve performance, whilst maintaining an overarching strategic overview of the compliance of the function.
Key accountabilities
- Leading the management of driver compliance, driving and improving our processes to ensure we are always legally compliant in relation to National Distribution drivers and our Vehicle Operating Centres
- Identifying structured activities to monitor operational compliance and deployment of remedial actions where necessary
- Managing the strategic and contractual relationships of key external parties such as the Traffic Commissioners, Highway England and the Fleet Transport Association. Ensure that Royal Mails interests are presented in appropriate circumstances
- Leading the interface with the Area Distribution Managers (ADMs) on compliance audits, and working closely with the HSE Compliance Audit team and the Fleet Compliance team to ensure a joined-up approach to managing compliance across the fleet
- Leading the National Advance Driver Coaches to ensure a consistent approach with peer-to-peer coaching, mentoring, DCPC and utilising the delivery of agreed training packages to assist in improving safety, legal compliance and efficiency within Royal Mail Operations
- Ensuring all operational activities are updated and compliant with relevant legislation, regulations and internal procedures
- Creating key metric reporting to drive compliance performance across the function and to identify opportunities to continuously improve compliance performance across the whole scorecard
- Act as driver compliance subject matter expert, you will offer guidance, advice and coaching on transport issues and will be required to communicate clearly on the required standards and policies to the team
Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications required
- Specialist knowledge of UK road transport legislation, including O licence requirements for Transport Managers and its impact on internal policy, compliance and standards
- Demonstratable experience of managing compliance within the transport space
- Able to deliver change and performance through people. A proven track record of exceptional leadership, leading and motivating large, disperse teams, building a strong, competent talent base to ensure continuing growth and success within the function and to the customer base
- Strong influencing skills with a style that is self-assured, confident and fair: a leader who engenders respect and trust from colleagues and their team and encourages a strong team ethic
- High levels of enthusiasm, energy and resilience combined with a pragmatic approach and the ability to move flexibly at pace when required
- Strong business acumen – can articulate and understand the links between business, operational strategy and solutions including key drivers of success
- Outstanding project management skills. Strong execution skill, proven experience in translating strategies and solutions into actionable plans and work; understands how to prioritise and deliver multiple tasks while ensuring BAU performance is unaffected
- Personal and professional gravitas and impact – strong communication skills with the ability to build credibility quickly and project a strong and convincing message
- Excellent influencing skills with the ability to build strong relationships internally and externally
- Demonstratable track record of creating effective change and building people capacity at a senior level, and in a highly unionised environment with embedded working practices would be a substantial advantage
- Proven record in effective stakeholder management skills, relationship building and on-going stakeholder management including upward
- Experience of coaching and developing a diverse team
- Can demonstrate accountability and ownership through visible leadership actions and a consistency of purpose whilst driving compliance and sustainment behaviours
