Faculty Education Team
The Faculty of Engineering Sciences comprises approximately 4,300 undergraduate (UG) students, 2,800 postgraduate taught (PGT) students and 900 postgraduate research (PGR) students. We are at the forefront of plans for UCL East which will further see our student population within the Faculty expand.
The Faculty Education Team, based in the Faculty Office, provides a wide range of administrative support to facilitate the delivery of teaching and activity and student experience support. The team works collaboratively across Engineering’s ten academic departments, and team members are expected to share responsibilities, learn from, and provide cover for each other as far as is feasible.
About the role
Main purpose of the job
- The DESE will lead and manage the Faculty Education Team and provide high-level leadership and support for the effective operational delivery of the Faculty’s portfolio of academic programmes. This will be combined with the highest possible standards of service to students and colleagues.
- The DESE, in collaboration with the Dean, Vice Dean (Education) and the Director of Operations, has overall responsibility for ensuring that appropriate action is taken in relation to students, to education delivery and to matters that impact student experience within the Faculty in line with UCL policy, and that appropriate contributions are made to strategy and policy development.
- The DESE holds an important and visible role across UCL with responsibility for leading or supporting the Vice Dean Education with Faculty education committees/working groups, quality management and enhancement processes, and matters pertaining to taught students at both UG and PGT level.
- Working closely with staff within the Faculty and its constituent departments, the DESE will: provide support and leadership for the Faculty’s education staff (both academic and professional services) to develop best practice; ensure compliance and the operation of quality assurance measures in line with UCL policy; and improve Faculty performance in education and student experience. They will work collaboratively with a range of senior colleagues within the Office of the Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) and Student and Registry Services.

About you
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following criteria:
- Educated to degree level, or have equivalent qualifications or substantial relevant experience
- Knowledge of Higher Education policy and current issues in Higher Education (within the UK, across Europe and globally)
- Significant experience of leadership within HE, including management of staff and resources, and building teams
- Experience of finding solutions to a range of problems by applying sound judgment, empathy, and a strategic understanding of relevant issues
- A clear understanding of equality and diversity issues as they relate to the student experience and how the issues can be addressed by the role-holder
- Relevant and substantial experience of student support within an education setting and including a wide range of academic and pastoral support activities. Experience of the interface between these roles and central student services is also important
