Job description
This unique role, which is dedicated to protecting BBC Studios’ valuable Children’s programmes, involves working across both the content protection and brand protection functions of the Content & Brand Protection Team at BBC Studios. The Content & Brand Protection Team sits within the Business & Legal Affairs division of BBC Studios.
The role involves protecting BBC Studios’ Children’s content from unauthorised uploads onto social media platforms, to protect it against inappropriate use and to protect BBC Studios’ own content sales. It also involves protecting Children's brands from unlicensed and/or inappropriate use, by providing administrative support to the brand protection lawyers in the Content & Brand Protection Team, and to the wider BBC Studios business.
Legal experience is not essential, but a keen interest in intellectual property – particularly copyright and trade marks – and how to protect it, is desirable.
Main Responsibilities- Liaising with BBC Studios’ internal business units and partners to identify content to be protected on social platforms.
- Utilising YouTube’s Content ID fingerprinting tool (and equivalent tools on other social platforms) to identify unauthorised copies of BBC Studios’ content on these platforms.
- Applying BBC Studio policies and exercising sound judgment in determining how to treat user uploaded content, balancing competing commercial, reputational and legal considerations.
- Researching and resolving rights-related issues, conflicts and 3rd party claims.
- Assisting the brand protection lawyers in enforcing BBC Studios’ trade mark rights including via customs recordables
- Providing administrative support to the brand protection team including managing invoices, maintaining databases and trade mark budget spreadsheets, and other administrative processes
- Under instruction from the brand protection lawyers, performing online takedowns from ecommerce marketplaces.
- Collating evidence for trade mark related disputes
- Working collaboratively with other members of the legal team and wider-BBC Studios business.
Essential
- You are aware of the BBC’s content and key brands and can talk with passion about the content and brands you love.
- You have some experience of working in a commercial environment.
- You are well organised and autonomous, able to prioritise a busy workload and focus on key activities to drive most impact.
- You are detail oriented - the role requires maintaining and optimising existing and new processes, keeping up to date records.
- You are able to communicate accurately, clearly and concisely and to build relationships and work supportively as a team member.
- You show initiative, commitment and flexibility when faced with obstacles.
- You are motivated to learn and open to constructive feedback.
- You are computer literate with skills across a range of IT packages, including Excel
Desirable
- You have some familiarity with content sharing / social media platforms (eg YouTube, TikTok, Dailymotion) preferably from both a user and account management perspective
- You have experience of handling confidential and sensitive information
- You have some knowledge and/or experience of copyright and trade mark law. You have some knowledge of fair dealing / fair use exceptions to copyright infringement and their relevance to social media platforms.
