Band 5 Diagnostic Radiographer

The X-ray department is inviting keen and motivated radiographers to join our highly skilled and dedicated friendly team. We are responsible for producing an exceptional standard of radiography for our Musculoskeletal Radiologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons and our specialised bone tumour team.

Permanent Contract–Full time, part time hours and bank will be considered. To be worked between 8.30am – 8.00pm seven days a week, being able to participate in the on call rota is essential.

You will undertake plain film radiography, theatre fluoroscopy, mobiles and interventional procedures. You will also have the opportunity to rotate through the MRI and CT suite.

The Radiography department is regarded as an integral part of the hospital service and is well equipped with all modalities represented.

The nearest train station is in Gobowen, approximately two miles from the hospital. The station is part of the Chester to Birmingham line.

Job Purpose

To assess and treat an identified workload of patients and maintain associated records.

To supervise Student radiographers and assistants.

To participate in C.P.D

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Perform general and highly specialised radiographic procedures , ensuring that high professional standards of work are achieved and maintained, whilst applying ALARA principles
using IR(ME)R guidelines. Be aware of and follow current IR(ME)R procedures.

2. When appropriate participate in the 24-hour on-call and standby services as allocated.

3. Organise, plan and prioritise workload according to clinical need without supervision

4. Organise In-patient workload co-ordinating portering staff, nurse escorts and or Doctors, adjusting plans in cases of unavailability of personnel or unforeseen circumstances

5. Adjust work pattern when Out Patient demand from clinics exceeds expectations.

6. Be a member of a Multidisciplinary team when in theatre taking the lead in advising on radiation protection of the other team members and patient , making sure that all team members are adequately protected with lead coats and ensuring that any members of staff who may be pregnant leave the area.

7. When appropriate supervise, support staff, students and nursing staff.

8. Participate in the training of student radiographers on placement at the RJ&AH.

9. Be familiar with all the X-ray equipment and systems operated within the department.

10. Maintain and update patient records.

11. Monitor patient conditions to ensure any adverse reactions are recognised and dealt with promptly and appropriately.

12. Suggest and implement improvement to services policies and protocols based on research and evidence based practice to improve the service the department offers to other users, using
ongoing audit to monitor the effect of any changes.

13. Maintain accurate equipment records and report any faults to a Superintendent or their deputy.

14. Perform daily, weekly and monthly equipment tests for Quality assurance, monitoring the results on a database for use by the Radiation Protection Service, noting any inconsistencies
and taking immediate action informing the Radiation Protection Advisor.

15. Maintain the principles of patient confidentiality at all times and ensure that all staff uphold this principle.

16. Undertake CPD training and study to ensure that a high level of professional knowledge and expertise is achieved and maintained.

17. Be competent in all of the specialised projections undertaken at the RJ & AH and train other members of staff in these techniques.

18. To be familiar with the departmental computer systems and enter Patient data to enable others to access details of attendances and reports.

19. Assess the patients’ fitness and ability to comply before physically manipulating them into the necessary position to obtain diagnostic radiographs and adapt techniques and working
practices accordingly to accommodate any disabilities or pathologies.

20. Empathise, persuade, negotiate with and provide reassurance to patients within the departments particularly those presenting with spinal cord injury, tumour patients and children.
Advise on radiation dose and effects.

21. Handing over areas of responsibility when moving on ensuring continuity and smooth running of department.

22. To participate in ongoing research projects. To be aware of and follow research protocols for imaging procedures.

23. Modify departmental protocols as necessary to ensure that radiation dose is kept to a minimum.

24. Monitor and maintain stock in own area.

Applicants must be HCPC Registered with BSc in Radiography (or equivalent)

The Radiography department is regarded as an integral part of the hospital service and is well equipped with all modalities represented.

The organisation is a single site hospital based in Oswestry, Shropshire, close to the border with Wales. As such, the Trust serves the people of England and Wales, as well as acting as a national healthcare provider. It also hosts some local services which support the communities in and around Oswestry. There are excellent road and rail links in the area with all major cities in the UK easily accessible.

The hospital has eight inpatient wards including a private patient ward, ten operating theatres, as well as extensive outpatient and diagnostic facilities. The hospital was awarded NHS Foundation Trust status in August 2011. This means that RJAH can better shape healthcare services around local needs and priorities and the requirements of commissioners of healthcare.
