Full Time (37 Hours) - Permanent
£26,232 - £29,433 per annum plus shift and weekend working allowances

Applications are invited for the above posts at Bury St Edmunds and Martlesham Police Investigation Centres.
The successful applicant will be;
- Currently Safer Detention accredited, with relevant custody first aid training
- Or willing to attend a Safer Detention course (details below) at the commencement of their employment
The mandatory training for successful candidates will commence for 6 weeks starting on 23 October 2023. There is a requirement that full accreditation as a Custody Detention Officer is achieved on conclusion of the training. The training venue will be Hethersett Old Hall, Norfolk. We can consider providing accommodation at Norfolk PHQ for the duration of this training if you live too far away to commute daily.
The recruitment process will consist of a formal interview which is likely to take place during week commencing 17 July, via Teams. Those candidates who are successful within the selection process will be required to attend a uniform fitting.
Custody Detention Officers are responsible for the care and welfare of detained persons whilst in custody. This includes the provision of food, drink and medication as directed, conducting basic health assessments, facilitating religious observance and making reasonable adjustments for the disabled. You must also be able to demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, with previous experience of effectively handling conflict and have the ability to work in restricted areas and confined spaces.
In addition, the duties will also include undertaking general care and maintenance checks to ensure cells, interview and changing rooms are clean, tidy and undamaged. You will also be required to complete all administration functions in the custody suite and take fingerprints, photographs and DNA samples and drug testing on arrest samples from the detainee.
As part of the role, Custody detention officer are also required to undertake escort duties and constant observation of detainees when required.
This includes the supervision and management of Virtual Court detainees and process. To be responsible for the safe and efficient management and coordination of daily Video Remand Hearing court processes from PICs in accordance with the VRH Operating Model and working under the guidance of the Custody Officer.

- Demonstrate good numeracy and literacy skills
- Demonstrate good face-to-face customer service skills
- Demonstrate the ability to maintain control of difficult situations and individuals
- Physical ability to effectively restrain detainees
- Experience of working to strict procedures and guidelines
- Experience of working effectively as part of a team
- Demonstrate the ability to be resilient and manage time critical priorities
- Good basic keyboard skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
- Full driving licence due to the need to drive police vehicles
It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:
- Previous experience of supervising the welfare of others
Hours of work are 37 per week working a ten-week shift pattern. These posts are offered on a permanent basis.
Consideration will be given to whether the post can be delivered on either a part time or job share basis, in line with the organisational requirements of this role.
