Job description

We are looking for an outstanding Designated Safeguarding Lead to join our team based in Walthamstow, East London. The successful candidate will ideally be educated to Degree level and have a DSL certificate or willing to undertake the training.

Key Tasks

•To be the first point of contact for staff and learners with safeguarding concerns.

•To support learners at risk including coordinating referrals to social care, attending and contributing reports for relevant meetings and keeping careful records of actions

•To develop and deliver training to college staff and updating relevant policies, procedures and guidanceas necessary.

•To provide support to staff members to carry out their safeguarding duties and who will liaise closely with other services such as children’s social care and in line with the Keeping Children Safe in Education Document.

•Lead on Training, raise awareness across the staff team on all matters related to Safeguarding and undertake referrals as appropriate.

•Respond in a timely manner to safeguarding concerns to ensure learners are kept safe from harm

•Attending meetings and making referrals to MASH or other appropriate agencies

•Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date documentation on all cases of safeguarding and child protection and provide reports where required

•Liaise with statutory agencies and ensure they have access to all necessary information to make sound judgements and decisions about learners’ welfare

•Collate and produce statistical and other information with regards to safeguarding and child protection

•Attend and participate in PEP meetings, Child Protection Conferences and Planning and Review meetings, some of which may take place out of normal working hours, working closely with colleagues in external agencies as required

•Maintain confidentiality at all times, and ensure appropriate confidentiality is maintained by all staff during safeguarding processes

•Deliver learner induction to session to ensure learners know what to do if they don’t feel safe

•Taking responsibility for staff Safeguarding and Prevent training - annual refreshers / interim training / email bulletins. Ensure that DOO, MD and student services manager training is kept up to date.

•Strategic development – ensure awareness of sector changes and keep the company policies up to date and compliant

•Line manage the Safeguarding Officer to support the safeguarding of learners, ensuring they meet the responsibilities in their JD

Person specification

•Experience of working in the field of safeguarding, with relevant experience and qualifications

•Willingness to participate in further training and development opportunities

•Experience of planning and coordinating meetings in a time-pressured environment

•Significant organisational and administrative skills, supported by a proficiency with ICT

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including telephone manner, tact, diplomacy and confidentiality

•Excellent interpersonal skills and solution focused approach to professional relationships

•Ability to consult and negotiate with external agencies to reach the best outcomes for children and young people

•Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines whilst still being polite and reasonable

•The ability to build and maintain relationships with the whole college community

•The ability to work in a demanding environment, meeting tight deadlines by prioritising and delegating as necessary

•Strong listening skills and the ability to deal with sensitive situations with integrity

•Ability to work as part of a team and demonstrate initiative

•A commitment to working in a busy college environment

Managing Referrals

The DSL will:

•Refer all cases of suspected abuse to the local authority children’s social care

•Refer to the Disclosure and Barring Service (cases where a person is dismissed or left due to risk/harm to a child); and/or Police (cases where a crime may have been committed);

•Liaise with the DOO to inform them of issues especially ongoing enquiries under section 47 of the Children Act 1989 and police investigations and

•Act as a source of support, advice and expertise to staff on matters of safety and safeguarding and when deciding whether to make a referral by liaising with relevant agencies.

Salary and days of work

35 hours per week, Full Time (52 weeks)

•Salary is £36,000 per annum (rising to £38,000 if specific targets are met)

•Start Date: ASAP
