Job description

We are an exceptional specialist Orthopaedic department with a worldwide reputation for innovation and most importantly for excellent patient care and treatment.

We currently have 5 operating theatres within our main theatre complex involving 2 theatres linked to our major trauma centre. We are currently developing a stand alone 2 theatre orthopaedic elective complex (NANOC).

We have 33 orthopaedic consultants who specialist in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery, elective and trauma. We are currently one of the largest orthopaedic departments in the country with several connections to overseas programs, local initiatives and research projects.

The orthopaedic theatre team consists of approximately 50 members of staff. This includes Registered Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) who work in both surgery and anaesthetics, Nursing Associates (NA) and theatre support workers (TSW) all working competently to support the philosophy of multi-skilling and integration of theatre personnel.

We have a unique opportunity to advertise a new position which will support our ongoing development and growth within the orthopaedic service.

As a deputy team leader in orthopaedic practice you will be responsible for

  • Managing and coordinating the orthopaedic service.
  • Supporting the Clinical Leader in providing expert clinical practice in our highly specialist orthopaedic service.
  • Assisting with the design implementation and coordination of support and development programs for qualified practitioners, preceptors, varied learner and support workers within the specialist areas for the purpose of recruitment, retention and skills improvement.
  • To provide expert clinical advice, guidance, leadership and managerial skills which will ensure the delivery of clinically effective service in line with both local and national development plans and Trust policies and procedures
You will also provide comprehensive leadership, effective management and coordination of the orthopaedic service in order to promote a patient centered approach to high quality health care whilst upholding and influencing professional and Trust values.

  • To exercise leadership by personal example, fostering good interpersonal relationships and encouraging high staff morale.
  • Co-ordinate and communicate the placement of appropriate personnel/skills across the department and other areas in the Trust, including in the event of untoward incidents e.g. MAJAX.
  • Able to interpret changes in patient physical signs and take appropriate action. Cardiac and Respiratory arrest and resuscitation of patients.
  • Initiate and participate in quality initiatives with the aim of improving patient care, promote evidence based practice and implement action plans as necessary.
  • Provide the relevant clinical learning experiences in an approved environment, in liaison with the Theatre Training Department and School of Nursing and Midwifery.
  • Undergo an annual performance assessment and agree a personal development plan which will ensure that the objectives of the individual, the unit and the Trust are achieved.
  • The post holder will support the Clinical leaders in the provision of relevant clinical learning experiences for Theatre Practitioners and Theatre Support Workers in the team to ensure that it meets the needs of clinical practice and service .
  • Accept continuing responsibility for the day-to-day management of patient activity ensuring the service provided is maintained at a high standard
