At ABP, we are recruiting for a Deckhand to join the team based at the Port of Grimsby. A Deckhand will support the Coxswain with the safe navigation of the vessel/pilot boat whilst underway and keeping a lookout. Alongside the Coxswain, a Deckhand will assist with all health, safety and welfare of the vessel/pilot launch (all on board and equipment) and associated shore side facilities.
We are looking for someone who is a great teammate, eager to work hard and get stuck in to this exciting and fast-paced industry, and wants to progress through the tiers up to a Coxswain and further! The key to success in this role is communication, it is critical that you can use your initiative and be proactive particularly when making decisions.
The Deckhand role follows a 4 on/4 off shift pattern with days/nights/weekends involved. What you'll also be doing...
- Respond to emergencies within the work area, on board or as directed by the Marine Services Manager, Assistant Dock Master(s), Assistant Harbour Masters or VTSOs.
- Ensure safe access and egress and to accompany pilots, passengers and other members of staff who may step aboard the vessel/pilot launch deck either underway or moored up.
- Support with the safe mooring in tidal and non-tidal waters. Give situational reports regarding weather and sea state condition to VTS.
- Keep the pilot launch log up to date and conduct emergency drills at least once per month as instructed by the coxswain.
- Ensure compliance with the ABP HES Pilot Launch Crew Instructions Approved Codes of Practice “The Embarkation and Disembarkation of Pilots, Port Marine Safety Code and Guide to Good Practice. To work compliantly within the current MCA or Health and Safety approved legislation.
- Complete relevant training and acquire the requisite knowledge, the current relevant certification and experience to allow eventual progression to the next launch crew tier.
What we're looking for...
- Full UK driving licence.
- Must be willing to undertake and give further training as the need arises to progress to Senior Deckhand and beyond.
- Be able to work in all types of adverse weather conditions.
- Understanding the complexity of working and covering 24/7 365 day rotating roster
- Computer literate.
- Knowledge of health, safety, welfare and environmental policies, practices and procedures.
- ENG 1 seafarers’ medical certificate or be in good physical health to successfully pass this medical.
Ideally, you'll also have...
- The following STCW95; Basic Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques, and Elementary First Aid.
- Efficient Deckhand Certificate (EDH) or Royal Navy deck equivalent. Deck experience either on a work boat, pilot boat or fishing vessel.
- RYA day skippers or working towards RYA coastal/day skipper qualification.
- VHF operations and procedures (minimum ROC).
