Job description
Salary: £68,899

Contract type: Permanent
The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.
We are looking for a Data Visualisation Lead to join our team.
Where in Wellcome will I be working?
You will join the Data Insights team - a team of quantitative and qualitative data analysts, data visualisation specialists and product managers. We build data products and deliver robust insights into our funding and organisational data, to support decision making at all levels of the organisation.
We sit within the Data & Digital team, which also includes software engineers, machine learning engineers and designers. We all work together in supporting Wellcome’s mission to address worldwide health challenges.
What will I be doing?
You will be leading on data visualisation at Wellcome, providing technical leadership and strategic direction for other members of the Data Insights team and more broadly across the organisation.
You will:
- Advocate for the use of data visualisation & analytics throughout Wellcome, making current analysis more accessible, identifying barriers to uptake and stimulating demand for new analysis
- Address complex problems the organisation is trying to solve through scoping, designing and delivering best practice dashboard/visualisation solutions
- Set the standards for data visualisation across the organisation, managing the content on Tableau Server and defining (and contributing to) the quality assurance process for adding new dashboards
- Effectively and clearly communicate technical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, shaping documentation, reports and dashboards to support the dissemination of research, analysis and insights
- Understand the ethical impact of any analysis undertaken and ensure that diversity and inclusion is always considered in how work is undertaken, the data being used and what analysis demonstrates
- Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments
Is this job for me?
You should love working with data and tackling challenging problems. You will work with key stakeholders to translate their requirements into data visualisation solutions, and support and upskill other dashboard builders across Wellcome to do the same. You will help shape how data visualisation is used to inform decision making at all levels of the organisation.
We are looking for someone who has:
- Exceptional data visualisation skills
- Substantial experience using Tableau (Essential – and desirable to have experience using other data visualisation tools/packages too e.g. D3)
- Substantial experience with all stages of the data analysis process (problem identification and structuring, data collection and storage, data investigation and exploratory analysis, data cleaning and manipulation, analysis and modelling, visualisation and communication)
- Ability to provide data visualisation and Tableau training and documentation, for beginners through to advanced users, and continue building the data visualisation community at Wellcome
- The desire to contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments
