Data Storyteller

Job Req ID: 15875
Posting Date: 10-May-2023
Function: Cyber Security
Location: 1 Braham Street, London, United Kingdom
Salary: Competitive with Great Benefits
Why this job matters
To transform data security in BT, finding existing initiatives and defining and championing new work to build and accelerate a coherent story across the business.
The role can be based in any of the following BT offices: Ipswich, London, Bristol, Bletchley, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham
What you’ll be doing
Each security story-teller creates, communicates, and accelerates one of our critical security stories – issues which are complex, long-running, critical, and most importantly fixable.
You will own the data story in BT, and a lot of your early months will be spent understanding the current situation and explaining your role. You are likely to start with targeted issues as you develop the influence in role to take on the systemic group-wide changes you identify. You will work with the rest of the team on shared topics, supporting on common problems and the meta-story of ‘what is story-telling anyway?’
Importantly, you will be able to identify gaps and work with the business to get them filled without becoming personally responsible for their delivery. This is not a programme or project management role, and your view needs to stay strategic. Likewise, you will not be a technical expert in any one field. Your skill will be in understanding the views of the experts and bringing them together to inform the wider plans.
None of this is easy. ‘Good’ for this role looks like keeping the faith when people are being pulled in multiple directions by rapidly changing priorities, and kindly but firmly bringing people back to the vision on a regular basis. You’ll need to be optimistic, resilient, and inspirational. You will need to build credibility with subject matter experts and senior leaders without any hierarchical position to default to.
What skills we’re looking for
Ideally, you will have a familiarity both with data security best practice and the tools and techniques available to improve data posture. You will also have a good track record in identifying and instigating fundamental business change in any domain – if this was simply a case of identifying the right tool and rolling it out it wouldn’t need to be a story.
Beyond this, you will be able to use multiple approaches to enable collaboration, and to communicate the resulting strategy to people in ways that fit their world views. You will be comfortable working across the full spectrum of communication, from inspiring images to robust multi-million-pound business cases.
You will be familiar with driving change at pace, continually asking ‘why?’ and ‘how?’ and using the answers to take us forwards. You will be working with every level of the company from team members to Exco, matching your story to your audience and building up long-term relationships with key influencers in all areas.
You’ll know you’re on track when people start repeating the vision back to you, when you see change happening, and when you hear about it from other parts of the company as something they believe we’ve always done. You’ll know you’ve succeeded when we’re the world's most trusted connector of people, devices, and machines.
A FEW POINTS TO NOTE:
Although these roles are listed as full-time, if you’re a job share partnership, work reduced hours, or any other way of working flexibly, please still get in touch – I’d love to hear from you.

DON'T MEET EVERY SINGLE REQUIREMENT?
Studies have shown that women, people with long-term health conditions, disabilities, or are neurodiverse, and people of colour are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification and criteria. We're committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace that feels deeply personal, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every requirement on the Job Description, please apply anyway - you may just be the right candidate for this or other roles in our wider team
