Why you
As a Staff Scientist in the Assay Development Team you will use your strong analytical skills, broad understanding of molecular biology/NGS and expertise in experimental design to drive the identification and evaluation of potential new laboratory technologies to implement at ILS’ clinical lab.
This can include leading the conceptualization of pilot studies or verification/validation efforts, designing, executing and analysing experiments, and presenting recommendations to stakeholders.
The role will be a technical expert within a multi-disciplinary team working to ensure ILS products meet their stated claims, global regulatory requirements, and customer expectations.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead planning and technical execution of cross-functional activities to drive design changes and evaluate performance of new technologies.
- Use DOE, critical parameter management, risk management tools and other mechanisms to characterize and evaluate new products or current workflows.
- Determine user needs and design requirements, as well as resources required to deliver products that fulfill them.
- Identify risks and provide recommendations for risk mitigation in assay development area.
- Influence decisions at project level impacting technology, processes and products
- Analyse data, draw actionable conclusions and make recommendations.
- Work in line with product development process and regulatory requirements associated with the implementation of changes at ILS.
- Represent Assay Dev in projects and investigations as required.
- Work closely with other ILS development and operations teams, as well as other Illumina inc functions (e.g., R&D and Medical Genomics Research) to evaluate, develop, transfer and sustain ILS workflows.
- Communicate frequently with project teams and senior management.
- Mentor peers and supporting scientists on technical skills.
Preferred background, skills and experience:
- PhD in molecular genetics, genomics, biological sciences or equivalent professional experience
- Extensive experience with NGS technologies (library prep and sequencing) essential. Experience with illumina technologies preferred.
- Experience in commercial or industrial research and development, ideally technology development.
- Familiar with automated liquid handlers (eg Hamilton) and LIMS preferred;
- Knowledge of NGS secondary analysis techniques, and data analysis software tools such as JMP, R and Tableau desirable.
- Experience on quality management system and a clinically regulated environment desirable.
- Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent skills in experimental design, troubleshooting, and data analysis.
- Proven ability to think innovatively toward solving problems effectively and efficiently.
- Analytical, detail-oriented, organized, takes initiative, and self-motivated.
