The role


Data is one of Beazley’s greatest assets. As Data Engineer Lead, you will support the Head of Data Products to establish and execute a data strategy that delivers business value by optimizing our data collection, and ensuring we manage and transform data in such a way that it is widely available and easy to consume as products. You will proactively work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the Data Engineering team delivers high performance data pipelines underpinned by modern data-streaming technology and set clear best practice and standards that enable you to coordinate your team. You will effectively communicate and champion the value of reuse to your stakeholders, and as the focal point for data engineering across Beazley, you will be responsible for ensuring your team successfully deliver robust data engineering across multiple data squads.

Key accountabilities

  • Promote and develop our data engineering standards by designing, building, automating, testing and monitoring data pipelines in close collaboration with data stakeholders using best practices around security and governance;
  • Establish enterprise-scale data integration procedures across the development life cycle, ensuring that engineering teams adhere to them, and that data services work effectively at an enterprise level
  • Work with the Head of Data Products to design, document and continuously improve our data engineering capability, including the development and governance of policies, standards, and processes to promote consistency and control.
  • Inspire best practice development of data products and services across your team and implement a culture of continuous testing / improvement across our pipelines and data
  • Take the concepts and principles of data modelling and produce / reverse engineer relevant data models, recognising opportunities for the reuse and alignment of data across Beazley
  • Identify opportunities for innovation in data tools and techniques, and consider appropriate timing for adoption
  • Develop transformation strategies and oversee the execution and implementation of DataEngineering standards across the Data Mesh model
  • Set the standard for quality assurance and documentation standards using version control and code repositories for implementations
  • Set enterprise-wide standards to monitor and improve data pipeline reliability, efficiency and quality
  • Work with Head of Data Products and your team to identify training needs for engineers to ensure competence and understanding of new concepts and enable thought / technical leadership
  • Support development of the enterprise strategy for Modern Data Architecture and ensure it delivers the process, tools and platform that enhance business outcomes
  • Seek and address feedback from business teams as part of a strategy of continuous improvement and engagement with the business and data owners on how to maximize data value
  • Build data engineering capability by providing technical leadership and career development for the community, and play a meaningful role in attracting, developing, unifying, and retaining talent across the data engineering / platform team
  • Collaborate with the Head of Data Products to define and deliver a data engineering development programme to ensure we continuously improve our competencies and capabilities
  • Engage with market leaders and internal product owners to understand problems and translate business requirements to technical solutions
  • Manage supplier procurement and management processes, ensuring collaborative partnerships are formed that are underpinned by clear statement of works and thorough MSAs
  • Maintain an appropriate balance of resources (FTE, FTC, contractor, staff augmentation, apprentices, outsourcing) to enable Data to achieve its outcomes whilst remaining agile.

Skills & experience


We are looking for candidates with experience of coordinating and implementing data engineering strategies. Someone who has a proven track record of implementing enterprise data engineering
standards and maturing capability to deliver advantage and enhance value delivery across a business. We are looking for someone who can innovate, and who knows how to encourage performance, motivate peers, and collaborate at the highest levels of an organization.

The successful candidate should have a passion for data and a curious mindset both for Beazley and the wider insurance industry. Great communication skills across all levels of seniority and the ability to represent data internally and externally to our colleagues, clients and regulators will also be important.

  • Proven success operating in complex delivery environments and experience in implementing New Ways of Working (e.g. Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)/Scrum at Scale (SoS)
  • Demonstrate an interest in and awareness of industry trends and a desire to continuously expand on your knowledge
  • Proven team player with ability to work with all levels in a highly intellectual, collaborative, and fast paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor them appropriately for different audiences, technical backgrounds, and seniority
Knowledge and Experience
Experience of modernising data infrastructure, products and services (tools like Snowflake, Databricks, Spark)
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, Java;
  • Experience with large scale data processing (e.g. Spark, Snowpark);
  • Experience with data lake / warehousing solutions (Snowflake – preferred, Databricks);
  • Experience working with databases, data modelling and big data;
  • Experience with batch and streaming processing, real-time applications, event-based architectures and pub/sub patterns (e.g. Kafka, Confluent);
  • Experience working in cloud environments (Azure preferred);
  • Experience with CI/CD workflows and git best practices;
  • Familiarity with APIs (REST, GraphQL);
  • Familiarity with Docker and terraform
  • Experience of leading delivery whilst managing and coaching teams
