Walt Disney Animation Studios is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to collaborate with world-class filmmakers, artists, and technical engineers in creating the magic of animation. The Data Services team is looking for talented engineers on the design, implementation, and optimization of our database systems. This role will critically support technology initiatives driven by studio needs for both Burbank and Vancouver.
Systems Engineers are expected to be highly collaborative, demonstrate self-direction when needed, and learn through experiencing both success and failure. You must be comfortable supporting your team by bringing fresh insight for shared problem solving. Also critical to success in this role is the ability to build trusted relationships with technical and non-technical users, understand their needs and pain points, and deliver relevant solutions.

Responsibilities
Lead initiatives on architectural design and optimization of our data systems and pipelines, which span multiple teams. This includes planning for expansion, analytics, and maintainability and also necessitates a close collaboration with team members and stakeholders
Must be an effective listener who engages with stakeholders to understand their requirements and subsequently designs applicable, practical solutions
Present on the current set up of services as well as propose more modern and/or suitable alternatives to support the data governance needs of the studio in the long term
Mentor of individuals on open-ended technical problems and complex infrastructure architecture
Experience supporting and leveraging Document databases, like Cassandra, ElasticSearch / OpenSearch, and MongoDB
Experience supporting and leveraging Relational databases, like MySQL, MariaDB, Postgres, and MSSQL
Experience with Unix shell scripting and system automation
Understanding of a server-side scripting language such as Python, C/C++, or Java
Solid communication, cooperative, and analytical skills, with a desire to continue to grow in these areas
At least 5 years of systems/software engineering and/or database administration experience; can include related internships
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with TimeScaleDB, Redis, Grafana, InfluxDB, and/or Logstash
Experience with AWS Data Managed Services, such as, S3 partitioning, Lambda for processing, Kinesis for pipelining, and/or Glue for ETL
Knowledge of Kubernetes fundamentals
Implementation of data ingestion and handling clusters through event streaming platforms, such as Kafka
Experience with Big Data management, including identifying appropriate on Prem/cloud storage and developing solutions based on data scale, analytic use cases, and immediacy of refresh

The hiring range for this position in California is $112,586.00-$151,030.00 per year based on a 40 hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
