Asda have an exciting opportunity to join the Data & Analysis team as a Data Engineering Manager. You will work as part of a diverse data function inclusive of Data Science; Forecasting; Reporting, Analytics, Insight and Product Ownership. You will collaborate with colleagues across these disciplines and business SMEs to deliver data products which ultimately allow Asda to make intelligent decisions.

What you will do:

  • Partner with visualisation, analytics and decisioning teams to understand existing infrastructure, data sets, use cases and pipelines.
  • Take a leading role in the transition of the team's existing products from on-premise to Azure as part of Asda's move away from Walmart systems and migration to cloud
  • Take part in cross-discipline projects, working with other data professionals & product owners. Own the engineering project plan ensuring clarity across its key elements: business logic, rules and commercial context, and the technical design and implementation
  • Direct and manage a small team of junior data engineers, supporting their technical and personal development
  • Manage data engineering projects according to agile principles, leading sprint planning and retrospectives, ensuring that tickets are well written, and that work is written up and documented appropriately.
  • Direct the development and deployment of data pipelines and data models
  • Establish and maintain data engineering and software development best practice through reviewing Pull Requests and carrying out code reviews.
  • Provide thought and technical leadership in data engineering, developing the data engineering community at Asda by presenting work within/outside of Asda and contributing to corporate initiatives
  • Propose, evaluate and scope new data engineering projects and estimate their value.

How you will do it:

You will have a deep understanding of data engineering principles including data modelling, performance optimisation, orchestration, and pipeline development.

You will create clarity both upwards and downwards, ensuring that stakeholders are engaged and informed about project progress and risks, and that team members understand priorities and tasks through effective written documentation and other artefacts.

You will have a large degree of freedom to frame the problem, identify and select technical solutions, and deliver the end product using an iterative, agile approach. With this freedom comes the responsibility to ensure that the project's focus remains on improving business outcomes.

Skills & experience:

  • Advanced software engineering skills in Python and Pyspark
  • Deep knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL
  • Advanced data modelling and data warehousing (Kimball, Inmon, Data vault)
  • Advanced data validation and testing
  • Extensive practical experience of version control principles (git)
  • Understanding of cloud computing and big data toolsets ie Databricks, Azure, Apache Spark
  • Degree in STEM subject or equivalent experience.
  • History of coaching junior engineers and aiding their development
  • Ownership of data products and participation in data-heavy projects as an engineer
  • Working in multidisciplinary teams with technical and non-technical team members
