Job description
Our analytical community is well respected and actively engaged in discussions on meaningful policy at all levels in the MOD. Our analysts routinely produce and publish many reports into the public domain, underlying MOD’s commitment to transparency. With renewed public interest in the evidence base that government makes its decisions on, high quality, credible analysis is more important than ever – and so are keen analysts!
The Personnel Statistics and Analysis team is part of the MOD’s Analytical Directorate. Our role is to support evidence-based decision making and workforce planning with statistical management, analysis, modelling and advice to the MOD. You would be working alongside military colleagues and policy professionals, understanding how Military Personnel data is recorded, how career paths evolve, providing insight to recognise and understand trends that will greatly influence how Defence will operate today and in the future.

What will I be doing?
Answer a huge range of queries from MOD, other government departments; devolved administrations; ministers and members of the public.- Work with a wide range of military data to provide evidence and insight that influences debate at the highest level.
- Keep abreast of innovative analytical techniques to improve our statistical outputs and apply the appropriate governance and assurance.
- Provide expert advice to customers, using large datasets to create and deliver consistent, accurate outputs.
- Utilise data visualisation techniques to develop dashboards and bespoke analysis to help inform and influence decision making
- Assist with modelling scenarios and producing forecasts using appropriate modelling software and techniques.
Qualifications
- a first or second class honours degree in a numerate subject (2:1 minimum for Assistant Statistician and 2:2 minimum for Statistical Officer) containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar)
- a higher degree, e.g. a MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar)
- have worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of two years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a logbook) in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five), which demonstrates the expected skills as outlined in the GSG Competency framework.

Annual Leave -As a new entrant to the Civil Service you are entitled to 25 days annual leave which increases by one day for each year completed service, up to a maximum of 30 days.
Special Leave -You may be able to take special leave in certain circumstances. Special leave is time off work granted for a variety of reasons in addition to any annual, maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental, parental, flexi leave, bank or privilege holidays or time off in lieu. Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leave -We offer a generous maternity and adoption leave package for staff having or adopting a baby (or child). Staff on maternity or adoption leave (primary adopter) can enjoy up to 52 weeks of leave, 26 of which are at full occupational pay (providing you meet the eligibility criteria). The remaining 26 weeks is split between 13 weeks at statutory pay and 13 weeks unpaid.
Learning and Development -The MOD encourages all employees to develop themselves and to constantly learn. Everyone should have at least 5 days’ a year learning (though we would always encourage more), whether that’s job shadowing, being mentored, undertaking your continuous professional development or going on a training course.
In-Year Reward Scheme -The In-Year Reward scheme allows line managers to reward their teams in real time. The scheme ensures you, as an employee can see a clear link between what you have delivered and the reward you have received. In-Year awards can be awarded up to £5000 per year. All In Year awards are subject to tax and National Insurance deductions.
Thank You Scheme -Retail vouchers of up to £100 can be awarded in recognition of an excellent one-off piece of work. The ‘Thank You’ scheme is a way of showing appreciation for the hard work, effort and achievement you contributed to a piece of work.
Pension -The Civil Service Pension Scheme is one of the best pension schemes in the country, famed for its financial benefits to staff. New starters will automatically be enrolled into a pension scheme.
Allowances -Statistical officers in MOD are eligible to receive an RRA of £1,500 per year which increases to £3,000 after the first year providing that the individual has demonstrated no significant weaknesses against any of the Functional Competence Groups
Posts based in High Wycombe also attract a locational allowance of £2,000

Candidates will also be required to detail their employment history, experience and any relevant qualifications in a CV, which could include any relevant training that the candidate has undertaken, to demonstrate they have appropriate analytical experience.
If we receive a high volume of applications we will conduct an initial sift using your CV and the lead technical skill, 'data analysis'.
Once this vacancy closes you will be invited via email to complete the GSS online multiple choice test. This is a timed test and must be completed by the stated closing date. At interview we will assess against the stated technical skills through both situational and evidence-based questions. Candidates will also be required to take a 30 minute statistical paper prior to interview and deliver a 5 minute presentation based on said paper.
