Job Duties

**This posting is open to current employees of the Virginia Employment Commission.**

Reviews, examines, and processes claims filed under the Unemployment Compensation. Works with federal agencies, other states and field staff to obtain information required to ensure timely and appropriate processing of claims. Prepares and transmits requests electronically and/or manually to other parties to verify eligibility of applicant, obtain separation information as needed, and ensure claims are filed legally without duplication from another state. Collects and enters wage data and status information into the Virginia Unemployment Insurance Claims System (VUIS), which is used to make determinations on eligibility and proper calculation of benefit entitlement. Provides guidance and training to staff in the field and claimants on procedural issues. Conducts research, reviews cases. and initiates corrective action to resolve claims problems. Maintains confidential claim files, prepares reports, and responds to inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

Minimum Qualifications

Working knowledge of UI benefits eligibility requirements, basic accounting principles; and office operations.

Strong customer service, oral and written communication, and data entry skills.

Ability to work independently and as a team member; respond to inquiries timely and professionally; work well with the public and internal and external staff; provide technical assistance; prioritize workload within established time constraints; collect and analyze information to make determinations; prepare reports; process UI claim information; resolve problems; record and enter information into a database; and interpret and apply program requirements.


Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from high school, GED and/or equivalent experience and training.

Experience entering and reviewing data in a mainframe and PC based system environment (such as VUIS or related system), providing administrative support, reviewing claims, and/or working with UI benefit programs.
