Job description

To provide a specialist child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy assessment and treatment service for children, adolescents and their parents/carers and families who may be experiencing severe, highly complex and persistent behaviour and emotional difficulties and/or associated mental health problems.

To contribute a psychoanalytic perspective to the service offered by a locality CAMHS team.
To provide specialist supervision, consultation, teaching and training within Children home and to
external agencies in agreement with the Home Manager and Operations Manager.
Under the direction of the Home Manager and Operations Manager, to contribute to the
development of child psychotherapy services within the service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. CLINICAL a) To participate in the delivery of a specialist Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy service

b) To provide specialist psychotherapeutic assessments of children and adolescents experiencing severe, highly complex and persistent emotional, behavioural, mental health problems and to make recommendations about treatment options taking into account the relevant evidence-based research.

c) To formulate and implement therapeutic plans and to offer interventions grounded in the principles and techniques of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

d) These will include longer-term interventions like regular psychoanalytic psychotherapy as well as shorter-term interventions.

e) To provide specialist expertise in psycho-analytic principles and techniques through advice, supervision and consultation to the members of a multidisciplinary and locality CAMHSteam.

f) The Post holder will be expected to hold and work their own caseload and to be responsible for monitoring and evaluating risk.

g) To attend and contribute as an independent clinician to multi-disciplinary and multi-agency meetings as appropriate and required.

h) To ensure appropriate liaison with professionals from external agencies in relation to shared cases

i) To participate in the evaluation of clinical work.

j) To contribute to the development of best evidence-based practice within the service.

k) To exercise autonomous professional responsibility based on the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics of the Association of Child Psychotherapists.

2. EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE * Experience of work with clients presenting high levels of complexity, in a CAMHS setting, including Looked After Children.

  • Experience in psychotherapy assessment and therapeutic work with children, young people

and families, parents/carers with a full range of presenting problems. * Experience of consulting with other professionals in Health Education +/or Social Services.

  • Experience of representing clinical child psychotherapy within the context of multidisciplinary

+ multiagency treatment and care. * Knowledge of legislation and national guidance in relation to the needs of children and
young people. * Masters level (or equivalent) knowledge of child and adolescent psychotherapy, including
highly developed knowledge of psychoanalytic theories and models of development, psychopathology, family and institutional dynamics. * Experience of working in CAMHS and/or with LAC, prior to training as a Child & Adolescent
Psychotherapist. Working knowledge of professional systems involved in work with children and young people, particularly in relation to the statutory framework around child protection. * Experience of audit.

  • Experience of research

3. SKILLS * Skills in the use of psychoanalytic methods of assessment, intervention and management in
work with children and families. * Skills in co-working, liaison and consultation with others, especially with regard to highly
complex clients, including Looked After Children. * Evidence of a capacity to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team context.

  • Ability to work with people from different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicity from one’s

own. * Demonstrate sensitivity in all contact with disadvantaged groups.

  • High level of ability to communicate effectively (both written and oral) complex, technical

and clinically sensitive information to children, young people, their carers and families, and awide range of professionals. * Ability to cope with stressful interpersonal situations, including maintaining a high degree of

  • professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse, and

the threat of physical abuse, and communicate in situations in which there may be barriers to the acceptance of communications.
