Council Tax Team Leader
Permanent / 37hrs per week.
As a Council Tax Team Leader you’ll be assisting the Senior Council Tax Officer managing a busy team dealing with Council Tax accounts. Ensuring the Council delivers an effective billing, collection, and recovery process. You'll take a customer focused approach to maximising revenue whilst making sure we meet our legal and statutory requirements.
You'll provide a professional and proactive service assisting in identifying and developing robust billing processes and recovery action against tax payers, this will require you to attend and occasionally represent the Council at Magistrates Court to obtain liability orders. This role can be challenging, as you'll be assisting in managing a team dealing with a range of queries relating to billing, collection, and recovery. However, you'll be playing a crucial role in supporting the Council in maximising its resources to deliver the best possible outcomes for the business in our borough.
The main duties of the post;
- To develop and maintain a high degree of technical knowledge of Council Tax administration and to be part of the Council's specialist team in this field.
- To assist the Senior Council Tax Officer in the day to day management of the Council Tax Team.
- To deputise for the Senior Council Tax Officer.
- To undertake general activities in relation to the administration and recovery of Council Tax including :
- Processing amendments to accounts
- Issuing of bills, reminders, summons and liability orders
- Interviewing tax payers face to face
- Dealing with tax payers by phone / email and letter.
- Processing direct debits mandates, unpaid direct debits including liaison with bank / building societies
- Recommend write offs
- Dealing with more complex accounts and complaints
- To carry out site inspections and visits for various purposes as required.
- To attend the Magistrates Court in respect of Council Tax related matters including the issuing of summonses and obtaining liability orders.
- Maintain work records and provide management with statistical information as and when required.
- To deal with bankruptcies, liquidations, breathing space applications and external Enforcement Agents.
- To liaise with other departments in relation to new and altered properties and to notify the Valuation Office of relevant matters.

You will have experience in/of;
Council Tax legislation and administration.
Sound financial and numeracy skills
Excellent computer skills and be fully conversant with all Microsoft packages
Ideally you will have;
A minimum of 4 GCSE’s or equivalent including Maths
Be IRRV qualified or working towards the qualification or prepared to study for the qualification.
