Role overview
Introduction to the role:
This role provides the opportunity to join one of the fastest growing teams in Hill Dickinson. The Health team have been growing year-on-year with a team of over 150 lawyers and national coverage, we are one of the leading firms providing legal advice and support to the NHS and independent healthcare organisations. There is also opportunity to assist both the Marine Business Group and Business Services Group with their costs requirements. This will involve dealing with a wide scope of costs requirements including costs budgeting and costs negotiation of high value commercial litigation and arbitrations.
Introduction to the team:
The Costs Team are built up of experienced costs litigation professionals based across London, Liverpool and Manchester. With extensive experience of dealing with high value costs ligation, costs budgeting, appeals, group litigation and technical challenges. Our experienced advocates regularly attend national court hearings across the country.
Key responsibilities:
- The successful candidate will be expected to provide dedicated costs support for litigation lawyers across several UK and International offices.
- Responsible for the management of a complex, high value caseload the individual will be drafting and considering costs estimates in arbitration and high court disputes, schedules of costs, bills of costs/budgets, negotiating costs to settlement, preparing costs submissions in arbitration proceedings and some advocacy.
- The role involves dealing with both adverse and recovery costs claims on predominantly multi track and arbitration matters.
- This role requires a self-starter with the confidence to work autonomously, working on files from start to finish.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for an experienced Costs Draftsperson or Costs Lawyer with a proven and demonstrable legal career in costs with experience dealing with high value claims. Experience of marine and shipping claims would be useful.
Essential:
- Extensive experience working as a Costs Draftsperson handling your own caseload
- Experience of drafting points of dispute, points of reply, costs budgets and bills of costs
- Experience of preparing detailed costs estimates and security for costs applications
- Attendance at CCMC hearings
- IT literate, particularly Excel, to include knowledge of using Costsmaster
- Up to date knowledge of the CPR and legislation
- Management of own caseload
- Excellent communication, organisation and research skills
- Adherence to guidelines and procedures
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- A flexible approach to work
- Ability to work as a team and independently
Desirable:
- Attendance at Detailed Assessment hearings
- Clinical negligence costs experience
- Knowledge of arbitration costs
- Experience of dealing with shipping and maritime costs
