Job description
As a Content Designer (Levels) in our Edinburgh studio, you will be working within the Design team to produce exceptional levels using custom level editing tools. You will be responsible for the full life cycle of a level, from initial concept through to final implementation and iteration. You will build levels from the ground up and implement all relevant logic and gameplay elements, as well as take responsibility for the visual quality. You will work under the direction of a creative lead and collaborate with artists and scripters to ensure that it aligns well with the other aspects of the game and its levels.
A Content Designer (Levels) should understand what makes levels fun to play and how to shape the experience for players. They should also have an understanding of industry best practice and standards, as well as a strong ability to respond constructively to feedback. This applicant is also expected to be able to deal with other related disciplines in order to resolve problems and elicit requirements within the context of level design.
Responsibilities
- Plan, build and iterate on interesting and visually compelling levels with a focus on great gameplay from conception through to final, game quality product.
- Receive and properly implement feedback from Leads and Directors in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the Design and Art teams to create and refine environments for gameplay purposes.
- Ability to concisely explain the reasoning behind design decisions.
- Prioritise, plan and manage the time of assigned tasks with oversight.
- Communicate clearly with other team members with minimal external help.
- Be vigilant for and report new problems, delays, and risks to the appropriate stakeholders.
Requirements
- A good understanding of level design principles and the theories of what makes games fun.
- A portfolio demonstrating maps or missions created within a game engine or in a game featuring player facing creation tools.
- Self-motivated and driven to creatively solve problems.
- Desire to work in a fast-paced, high growth, start-up company environment.
- An ability to respond constructively to feedback and effectively manage various pieces of feedback concurrently.
- Strong English skills (written as well as verbal).
- Experience working with a game engine (UE, Unity, UDK or other proprietary), using tools to create environments and/or gameplay is desirable but not required.
- Experience with Unreal Engine 4 or Unreal Engine 5 is desirable but not required.
- Shipped AAA game(s) is desirable but not required.
- Experience working in any games industry job is a strong plus.
- Willing to work full time in our office in Edinburgh.
