Job description

Location- Royal Brompton Hospital

This post is a new post for a whole time Consultant Cellular Pathologist, specializing in Thoracic Pathology

To provide, in association with other consultant staff, a full histopathology, cytology and PALS support service to the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, including undertaking frozen sections, as well as night-time and weekend cover on a rotational basis for urgent biopsies. The workload will comprise mainly thoracic pathology, with cover of cardiac pathology as required. General histopathology will still, however, comprise a minor part of the workload. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the on-call rota for both sites; training for participating in the transplant service will be given as required.

To participate in clinical-pathological meetings, conducting those dealing with thoracic disease, and providing cover for cardiovascular and transplant pathology meetings as appropriate.

There is a single histopathology service which has been largely centralised at the Royal Brompton Hospital. The Laboratory at the RBH site is housed in adjacent well-equipped air-conditioned laboratories in the Sydney Street wing alongside other Pathology disciplines. A pathology “hot lab” is maintained at Harefield Hospital for the provision of a remote frozen section reporting service (performed digitally using a Leica-Aperio slide scanner). It is currently staffed by a specialist BMS. Senior medical staff has individual offices equipped with modern workstations, networked desktop computers to current Trust specifications and consultant-grade microscopes with co-observation bridges and digital cameras. The department is well equipped with relevant books and journals and there is access to library facilities on both sites. The laboratory management is anticipated to transition to Synnovis in August 2023, with no immediate change to service, but a transformation plan to develop digital pathology and enable hub and spoke working.

Apart from informally teaching junior staff working directly with him/her, the post holder will be expected to make a positive contribution to postgraduate medical education within the organisation and undertake teaching of and support for junior doctors as necessary. The post-holder may also be expected to undertake teaching of both undergraduates at the Imperial College School of Medicine and postgraduate teaching within the North Thames region, although commitment to the hospital service and to in-post training of hospital staff must take priority.

The post holder will undertake and contribute to appropriately funded and ethically approved research in thoracic pathology, in collaboration with the other members of thoracic pathology and other research teams in the Royal Brompton Hospital and Harefield Hospitals and its research partners. This will include support from the recently formed respiratory and cardiac Clinical Research Facility. At times there is likely to be collaboration (by mutual consent) with the thoracic pathology group (Lead pathologist: Professor Andrew Nicholson) cardiac pathology group (Lead pathologist: Dr Jan Lukas Robertus) and the heart and lung transplantation unit at Harefield (Lead pathologist: Dr Alexandra Rice).

The post holder will actively conduct/participate in audits related to both clinical and non-clinical aspect of the work and participate in Hospital audit programmes, including mortality meetings.
