UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. CEGE are located on the Bloomsbury campus with extensive teaching and research laboratory facilities. In addition, we have a structural and environmental facility for large scale testing based in Stratford, East London. Our unique facilities also include the Person-Environment-Activity Laboratory (PEARL) and a new Clean Active Ventilation Environments (CAVE) laboratory based in Dagenham which explore the ways in which people interact with their environment.
About the role
UCL Advanced & Innovative Materials (AIM) Group comprises of five academic staff with complementary skills and ten PhD students. Reporting into the Technical Support & Infrastructure Manager, we are looking for an innovative and enterprising person to fill the role of Research & Teaching Support Technician in Concrete and Cement Materials. You will be joining our team of multi-disciplinary technicians in the department’s laboratory to provide practical technical support to the day to day running of the Advanced Materials laboratory and to facilitate research and teaching.
About you
We are keen to hear from applicants with a proven track record of providing practical technical support in a concrete laboratory either in a higher education or an industrial environment working on research, experimentation, and testing. The successful applicant will have acquired Stage 1 and 2 of The Institute of Concrete technology or GCE/A ‘level in science subjects or equivalent career experience to give you the foundation to advise fellow staff, researchers and students on technical issues relating to concrete and cement technology.
It is essential that you have experience in testing of concrete and cements in fresh and hardened state, knowledge of the production and performance of concrete and cement properties and knowledge of the relevant statutory regulations for health and safety in an Advanced Materials laboratory working with concrete and cements. While the ability to use compression/flexural testing equipment is essential, training will be provided to fill any knowledge gaps.
If your are an independent worker with the ability to work with minimum supervision, to prioritise your own workload effectively within deadlines and with competing demands, this is most certainly the role for you. Equally, a passion for learning and professional skills development is essential to assure your continued progression.
While it is not an essential requirement, prior higher education experience of working with academics, undergraduate/post graduate students will enhance your application.
