Senior School Teacher

Job purpose:

  • To teach boys within the School and to carry out such other associated duties as are reasonably assigned by the Headmaster

Responsible to:

  • Relevant Subject Leader

Principal responsibilities:

  • To ensure, through the teacher’s own knowledge, understanding and detailed planning, the effective delivery of agreed Schemes of Work, including appropriate educational visits
  • To evaluate and adjust planning/teaching as necessary, regularly reviewing the teaching and learning that is taking place.
  • To use ICT effectively including the use of interactive whiteboards as an integral part of the teaching.
  • To be available for training and preparation for 2 days, as arranged, before each term.
  • To support the learning of each boy according to his ability, providing assistance or extension work as necessary.
  • To supervise the work of classroom assistants assigned to the class, where appropriate.
  • To assess, record and report in accordance with school policies and procedures.
  • To be responsible for the use and storage of books and other teaching materials provided for class use.
  • To provide a high standard of pastoral care for all boys.
  • To create a lively and stimulating environment that is appropriate to boys’ learning and development and that encourages boys to take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour.
  • To undertake a curriculum or organisational responsibility, as assigned, that contributes to the smooth running of the school.

General duties:

  • To participate in staff review arrangements and to keep up-to-date with educational developments, including attending relevant courses.
  • To participate in/attend appropriate meetings and events with colleagues, boys and parents as required, including school assemblies.
  • To complete registers in accordance with legal requirements.
  • To carry out a share of supervisory duties efficiently, as required.
  • To cover, as necessary, for the absence of other teachers.
  • To organise/participate in co-curricular activities, as reasonably required.
  • To follow procedures as laid out in the Staff Handbook.

In addition to this, teachers of GCSE:

  • Should demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge, concepts and skills of their specialist subject(s).
  • Should be familiar with the GCSE examination system and confident in the delivery of a public examination syllabus.
  • Should demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge extending beyond the examination specifications.
  • Should plan their lessons carefully to maintain the interest of the boys and to meet curricular requirements.
  • Should be setting individual targets for boys based on MidYIS and other test data.
  • Should be aware of the changing needs of adolescent boys in the classroom and set appropriately demanding expectations.

In addition to this, teachers of A level:

  • Should be familiar with the A level examination system and confident in the delivery of the examination syllabus.
  • Should demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge extending beyond the A level specifications.
  • Are likely to hold a degree (or equivalent) in their subject specialism or in a closely related subject.
