Community Teaching Assistant

Community Teaching Assistant Bedford, England

MacIntyre
Full Time Bedford, England 10.5 - 11.43 GBP HOURLY Today
Job description

Would a term-time role in education suit your lifestyle? Would you like to be part of an exciting new project providing bespoke education in Bedford for young people who have a learning disability?

Due to increased demand for our support, MacIntyre No Limits is working with Bedford Borough Council to create a new provision for young people with a learning disability and/or Autism, who are transitioning into further education. From a freshly renovated base in Cotton End, you will be involved from the very start of this new provision and will play a key role in supporting our learners to achieve their educational outcomes.

As a Community Teaching Assistant, you will not always be confined to the classroom. The learning will be out in the community and learning at our base, depending on the needs of the young person.

You'll teach young people whose learning difficulties or Autism mean that mainstream education won't always meet their needs. Using a tailored curriculum, you teach what is important for the individual: key life skills and appropriate lessons in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

By way of example, one learner that started with No Limits, Amanda*, had been supported 2:1 in school and was not included in any of the group lessons. During her first term with No Limits we developed a communication system that enabled Amanda to make active choices in her day and have control of how, where and what she was learning. This in turn made her more secure and confident in her learning and by using a communication method that made sense to her we had a dramatic reduction in behaviours that challenge and Amanda was not only able to join in group sessions with peers, but also made friends with other learners.

You'll be working with learners from 9.00 am to 4pm with an additional half-hour of administration time afterwards to record the learning.

You'll work in the Bedford area, with positions available both part-time and full time on a 37 week term-time contract.

Every day is different but one thing is the same: the achievement you will feel as you watch young people blossom into adulthood.

You must be a driver with your own transport, willing and able to travel across the Bedford, supporting young people from their own homes and in the community

  • Name changed for confidentiality

MacIntyre is a national charity which supports over 1,200 people with a learning disability and/or autism.

We were founded in 1966 by the visionary parent of a child with disabilities and have been growing steadily ever since. We celebrate and develop everyone’s unique gifts, talents and contributions.
