Job description
The right candidate will have experience in big-picture planning, community relations and the hands-on execution of content and communications, ideally for a scientific or engineering project or organization. The person will have the ability to connect with scientific groups and the public and create content from start to finish. You will have excellent verbal and written communications skills, ideally with experience in public relations.
This position is open for relocation.
You Will:
- Implement and lead Fermilab’s communication strategy for its site in Lead, home of the South Dakota portion of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility and the large particle detectors of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment
- Serve as key point of contact for communication for Fermilab’s South Dakota site, working in concert with members of the Fermilab Communication Division, the LBNF team, the DUNE collaboration and the Sanford Underground Research Facility
- Develop and lead communication efforts involving local stakeholders
- Serve as the media point of contact for the Fermilab Lead, SD site and work with the Fermilab media relations manager to organize interviews
- Help organize and lead tours a mile underground to show stakeholders the progress on LBNF/DUNE
- Work both individually and with team members to write news updates and develop content for our websites, social media channels, public meetings, campaigns and other communications efforts.
- Build the editorial calendar and complete all website and social media posts, including news, achievements and events
- Track metrics and monitor comments; when internal or external issues arise, advise on communication strategy and coordinate messaging
- Uphold Fermilab’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Travel occasionally to Batavia, Illinois and potentially other meeting locations
- Bachelor's degree required; journalism, communications, media or related degree preferred
- At least 6 years of dedicated communications experience
- Self-motivated and self-directed
- Outstanding copywriting, editing and grammatical skills
- Ability to create quality content for the public from concept to delivery
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
- Ability to translate technical concepts into language comprehensible to non-specialists
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all levels of staff in a team-based environment, and to fulfill urgent requests in a timely and professional manner
- Ability to track, analyze and report on communication performance metrics
- Experience with content strategy and using social media to achieve communication goals
- Experience with graphic design and tools, including photo-editing software, is desirable
- Experience creating short videos for social media is a plus
