We have an exciting opportunity for an Internal Communications Manager to be based at our modern, contemporary, state-of-the-art new head office, the Isaacs Building, located in Sheffield's 'Heart of the City'.

The Role:

Reporting directly to the Marketing & Communications Director, the role of the Internal Communications Manager (ICM) is to lead the formation and delivery of the internal corporate communications strategy for Henry Boot Group. This is a manager position with the responsibility to create a strategy and manage one direct report. The purpose of the role is to inform, engage and excite our people with a targeted and well-planned annual programme of communications and employee engagement.

Working closely with the Director of Marketing & Communications, the role also requires close working with the wider PLC Marketing team, subsidiary marketing & communication team members, the HR Director, the Organisational Development Manager, and other members of the HR team. The role of internal communications co-ordinator will report directly to the ICM.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Plan for, create, seek approval of and regularly report back on the effectiveness of a strategic internal communications plan for Henry Boot PLC;
  • Provide guidance and support for all subsidiary marcomms teams on best-practice internal comms which are both linked to Group-wide initiatives and also tailored subsidiary content;
  • Be the main point of contact for all in-house teams, but primarily working with the HR, Marketing, Organisational Development, Learning & Development and Responsible Business teams;
  • Responsible for the in-house ‘Hub’ / intranet portal to ensure (with the support of the internal communications co-ordinator) it is kept up to date with relevant and engaging content and delivers the highest engagement possible;
  • Responsible (with the support of the internal communications co-ordinator) for the curation, planning and delivery of the Henry Boot internal monthly e-newsletter and wider email strategy;
  • Provide support and produce content for the continued rollout of the Henry Boot reward strategy, employee benefits and performance-related communications linked to job grading;
  • Work closely with the newly created position of Henry Boot / Isaacs Community Manager / Host role and the internal communications co-ordinator to inform and promote an annual calendar of internal events to engage our people with commercial/responsible business performance and the promotion of ESG, charitable, social impact projects both head office-based staff and with staff from the wider business subsidiaries;
  • Responsible for the promotion and communication of results of our annual employee engagement survey facilitated via the ‘HIVE’ platform and additional colleague listening activity facilitated through engagement with our employee forums;
  • Provide support to the HR team on the communications element of our on-boarding and induction initiatives;
  • Support the Henry Boot website with relevant content to champion talent attraction and career progression;
  • Support the Senior Corporate Communications Manager in the successful internal communication of the Henry Boot Group commercial strategy from December onwards to achieve a full understanding of and buy-in from all our people.

About You

  • The ICM will need to be organised, excellent at planning, with an open, collaborative and positive disposition
  • Excellent communications skills will be required as well as an excellent time and project management skillset
  • A full working knowledge of the business’ commercial strategy and associated performance will be required to inform the internal communication aspect of the role
  • Good negotiation / influencing skills
  • A data-driven approach to work
  • The ability to keep calm under pressure to deal with multiple workstreams.
