The opportunity

Our new Tax and Law Digital Growth team exists transform how and what we sell. We do this by creating and enhancing client relationships through digitally driven interactions and insights. One suite of market facing propositions enables us to build digital relationships with our buyers at scale and add value in new ways. Another set of internal propositions enables our client serving teams to focus on the highest value sales opportunities. For our clients this means more value and more insight delivered at higher speed.


The Commercial Analyst Role will work closely with colleagues across Tax, Technology, and Innovation teams during the early stages of solution development, through to launch in the market.


The individual will take a lead role in the definition and shaping of the commercial aspects of new incremental growth projects progressed by the Tax and Law Digital Growth team.


Throughout the solution development lifecycle, the individual will be responsible for delivering thorough analysis to ensure that new technology ventures, products and services are aligned to EY strategy, and are underpinned by a robust commercial model which will maximize their market potential.


Your key responsibilities


The primary responsibilities of the Commercial Analyst are to:

  • Work with Tax and Law teams to define an initial baseline for commercial aspects of new technology projects
  • Lead analysis to understand strength of commercial approach, identify risks and improvement opportunities
  • Define and deliver activities to enable Tax and Law teams to build more robust propositions, including - competitor analysis, market size analysis, pricing model development, cost modelling, operational feasibility modelling, value proposition development, business case development
  • Support offerings from conception through to maturity and work with Tax and Law teams and Business Development during launch of solutions into the market – including work to develop sales playbooks, go-to-market campaigns, and activation

Analytical and decision-making responsibilities will include -


  • Assess the alignment of new offerings to EY strategy, identify opportunities to maximize market potential
  • Provide analysis of business case and commercial plans, and use own judgement and acumen to provide recommendations for improvement
  • Initiate and lead activities to improve commercial propositions
  • Use data-driven approach and understanding of external market environment to proactively challenge stakeholders across the business to build better go-to-market for technology solutions

In addition to the primary functions, the Commercial Analyst will support -

  • On-going development and maintenance of market knowledge for the Digital Growth team – via relationships with internal knowledge teams and external market analysts
  • Development of the Digital Growth team via on-going learning and adoption of best practice tools, techniques, and approaches

Candidates would ideally have a range of the below skills, however not all are essential


  • Ability to quickly grasp new commercial models and identify key value drivers and critical assumptions
  • Knowledge and interest in, disruptive technology and new business models
  • Understanding of ‘big 4’ professional services business model and offerings
  • Ability to explain complex ideas and sometimes ambiguous concepts to a range of audiences
  • Confidence to challenge senior stakeholders with data-driven insights
  • Strong analytical foundations, highly numerate and the ability to problem solve
  • Strong commerciality and business awareness
  • Strong application of economic principles, company strategy and financial performance
  • Proactive and confident in handling challenging situations
  • Strong orientation towards working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and able to move forward with imperfect information and get things done in a changing environment

Desirable educational and professional background would encompass some of the following elements

  • A degree in a numerate discipline such as economics, business studies, mathematics, or equivalent
  • Professional qualification - ACCA, CIMA
  • Experience developing and justifying business plans
  • Excellent skills in presenting and analysing data
  • Experience in and a passion for data-driven projects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to report and persuade different levels, including senior management
