Job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated clinical trainee interested in Neurology research to join our Parkinson’s disease and Neuro-imaging clinical research programmes. This post will be predominantly patient focused, playing a key role in helping to obtain a better understanding of the link between basal ganglia function and pain in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Pain is a common, debilitating and poorly understood non-motor symptom in PD. The successful candidate will undertake fMRI analysis in PD patients and controls after an experimental thermal stimulus has been applied, using a computer-controlled, MR-compatible contact heat evoked potential device (CHEPS). The ability to implement good clinical practice is therefore essential. The successful candidate will form part of a multidisciplinary, international team of collaborators funded by a Centre of Excellence (CoEN, https://www.coen.org/) award to study the dysfunction of the nociceptive network in PD, combining preclinical and clinical approaches.
The ability to implement good clinical practice is essential for this Experimental Medicine study.
You will have the opportunity to be part of the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (Translational Neuroscience for Chronic Neurological Disorders) Junior Academy and gain an appreciation of a wide variety of translational neuroscience research programmes.
The successful applicant will integrate with a multidisciplinary team of academic neurologists and scientists with expertise in an array of cutting-edge biological and clinical research techniques at the state-of-the-art Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), University of Sheffield and the Academic Directorate of Neurosciences, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The post offers comprehensive experience of clinical academic Neurology, working alongside internationally renowned Clinicians and Neuroscientists. The appointee will have the opportunity to learn the principles and practice of experimental medicine studies. Candidates are expected to be highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals wishing to excel in both clinical and academic training and with the ambition to be amongst the next generation of leading academic Neurologists.
The post will be based in the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (http://sitran.org) at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The post is available immediately for up to 12 months.
