This is a newly created leadership post for the Maternity and Neonatal Services at NUH. Over the course of the fixed-term contract, you will lead the team providing Pharmacy services to these specialties through a period of intense change, including the introduction of ePMA and preparing for the move into the expanded neonatal unit at QMC which is due to open in December 2024.
Main duties of the job
To provide leadership to the Pharmacy team caring patients under the care of the Maternity, Neonatal and Gynaecology Services.
To provide leadership on the Pharmacy/Medicines aspects of the Maternity Improvement Plan and the Maternity and Neonatal Redesign Project.
To support the introduction of ePMA into Maternity and Neonatal services at NUH.
To be a Trust-wide opinion leader for pharmaceutical matters relating to Maternity, Neonatology and Gynaecology; including providing professional leadership and support to clinical pharmacists
To strategically develop and lead the provision of expert clinical practice – promoting safe and evidenced-based practice and contributing to improved clinical outcomes and services to patients in line with the Health Education England multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice.
To contribute to service development, clinical audit and research within the Family Health Division and the Pharmacy Department.
To provide specialist training and education on medication related topics to the MDT.
To work with the wider Family Health Pharmacy team to provide clinical cover for inpatients and those attending hospital for day case treatments.
To take full part in 7 day working (including bank holidays) within the wider Pharmacy Department.
To take part in senior pharmacist on-call duties

The Maternity service at NUH delivers over 10,000 babies a year, and there has been a recent significant expansion of the Pharmacy service provided to our Maternity wards, including the creation of two new MMT roles.
The neonatal service at NUH operates across two sites, with neonatal ICU, HDU and Special Care cots at both the QMC and City Hospital campuses. We provide care to vulnerable babies from throughout the region, with QMC being a specialist centre for Neonatal Surgery. To meet increasing demand, the neonatal unit at the QMC campus is being rebuilt and expanded, with the new facilities due to open in December 2024.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- B.Pharm / BSc (Pharmacy) or MPharm
- GPhC registered
- Clinical Diploma or equivalent qualification or demonstrable equivalent clinical experience
- Demonstrates continued professional development
- Member of relevant national specialist pharmacist group and playing an active role in developing specialist pharmacy practice
- To be qualified as a pharmacist independent prescriber and actively prescribing in practice
Desirable criteria
- Holds a position of office in a relevant national network / specialist pharmacist group
- Leadership and/or management qualifications
- MSc in clinical pharmacy or higher research degree (MPhil or PhD)
- Postgraduate qualification in relevant clinical speciality
- Training undertaken to obtain further clinical skills, e.g. clinical examination
- To hold evidence of practice at advanced stage II, as part of the RPS Advanced Pharmacy framework, or to be working towards credentialing
- Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive previous hospital Pharmacy experience
- Extensive experience of delivering clinical pharmacy services at a specialist level to acute inpatient specialties, both on an individual patient and a wider service basis.
- Demonstrates in-depth pharmaceutical skills and knowledge within the speciality. This will include provision of highly specialist review and advice relating to the safe use of medicines.
- Expert knowledge of national policy, strategy, guidance and evidence-base relating to the speciality
- Experience of developing and implementing medicines and service related policies for a speciality / directorate and managing risk.
- Experience of leading projects and managing change, with evidence of completed outcomes
- Experience in undertaking, supervising and reporting/presenting audit / research work at local (Trust) level.
- Experience of multidisciplinary and team working at Pharmacy, Trust and regional level
- Effective liaison with relevant Trust level committees / groups
- Experience of preparing and delivering training and education of both pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals
- Proven ability to work alone and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Good understanding of healthcare policy and agenda
- Experience of line management and mentoring
- Experience of working with electronic prescribing and administration systems.
