Band 6/7 Metabolic Clinical Nurse Specialist
Fixed Term/Secondment 30 hours per week
Due to maternity leave, we currently have exciting position for an enthusiastic Band 6 or 7 (based on experience) CNS to work within the metabolic nursing team.
The South West Regional Metabolic Department provides care for over 650 patients across the region. Whilst some nursing experience or degree of knowledge of these conditions would be advantageousthis is not essential.
Many patients are at risk of becoming ill very quickly and need emergency management initiated quickly and appropriately. The metabolic CNS is often the first point of contact for enquiries from patients, relatives and other professionals.
This is an excellent opportunity for a committed paediatric nurse with excellent verbal and written communication skills to work within a specialist team and autonomously; using their own initiative, demonstrating problem solving skills and brilliant organisational skills.
This role is essential in supporting patients and their families from diagnosis, ongoing care, and management to transition or end of life care.
You will work as part of the established CNS team providing care to all aspects of the metabolic service including the care of Batten’s disease patients at Bristol Children’s Hospital and the care of Barth Syndrome patients nationally.
Main duties:
- Provide patients and staff with specialist advice to manage complex symptoms for both inpatient and outpatient care including emergency alerts and illness management
- Develop, improve, and promote the service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective care utilising the support and guidance of senior colleagues
- Develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team
- Develop the skills to act as a resource in the care of patient’s needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their carers.
- Work closely with community, hospital, relevant network staff and organisations to ensure an effective seamless service.
- Provide effective communication systems of support for patients
- Provide education to professionals, patients and their families
- Build up a skill set to embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of specialist nursing practice.
- Ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical trials
- Work as patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided to each patient.
- Support patient investigations and care including CNS led investigations and patient infusions e.g. enzyme replacement therapy
- Coordinate and plan patient assessments as per care plans and national monitoring e.g NICE managed access agreements
- Provide cross cover to the Paediatric Metabolic, Batten’s and Barth Syndrome CNS service
