Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen at The Christie Pathology Partnership (CPP) for a Band 7 Clinical Scientist within the Biochemistry section of Blood Sciences. This is a 12 month fixed term contact to start ideally end of August 2023, all applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

The Christie Pathology Partnership was formed in 2014 and is a joint venture between The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and SYNLAB, the largest provider of laboratory pathology and diagnostic services in Europe. We provide Pathology services for The Christie, the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, treating more than 44,000 patients a year and recently rated Outstanding by the CQC. Christie Research has more than 650 open trials and is the largest centre in the UK for commercial cancer trials. It is a Cancer Research UK Major Centre, part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre, and hosts the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility. The Trust is also one of the “first wave” of hospitals offering CAR-T therapy on the NHS.

Role:

As part of this role the successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Translational Biomarker Validation studies including VALTIVE1, a multi-centre Cancer Research UK funded clinical trial.

You will also be expected to work alongside colleagues in Blood Sciences providing general and specialist biochemistry services, including endocrinology, therapeutic drug monitoring, specialist proteins, tumour marker analyses and manual ELISA and will participate in the duty Biochemist rota within Blood Sciences alongside Consultant Clinical Biochemist and Principal Biochemist.

Role Purpose:

  • To provide a clinical liaison role with medical and non-medical colleagues for the interpretation of results and subsequent recommendations for further action
  • To ensure a high quality of analysis agreed quality standards of service delivery and key performance indicators.
  • To provide an expert level of theoretical and practical knowledge to the laboratory service
  • To contribute to specialist training delivered to other Healthcare Professionals and to provide expert technical advice in areas of responsibility to all Healthcare Professionals.
  • Ensure that all areas of responsibility comply with all relevant current and future legislation and complies with the requirements of Medical Laboratories UKAS 15189:2012 and the recommendations from the Royal College of Pathologists and similar professional organisations.
  • To provide professional leadership to Support staffs
  • To undertake research, conduct audits, produce reports and present findings to Healthcare professionals as required.
  • To continue with personal development through Academic or practical experience.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • HCPC State Registration as a Clinical Scientist, with evidence of Continued Professional Development
  • MSc in relevant subject e.g. Clinical Biochemistry
  • Other mandated qualifications specific to the role (eg FRCPath or working towards this)
  • High level working knowledge of biomedical techniques and practices at post honours degree level.
  • Expert interpretive and diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of National guidelines and protocols relating to specific discipline
  • High degree of accuracy and numeracy
  • Good knowledge of computer applications and LIMS including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Statistical Packages
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Leadership qualities

Desirable:

  • ELISA experience
