- Coordinates library circulation system, including audiovisual (AV) equipment and software as assigned; enters and deletes database information; checks materials in and out; assists students in use of equipment and resources; maintains security of materials and equipment.
- Process library books, classroom textbooks, periodicals, materials, AV equipment, computer software and hardware for student and teacher use; checks invoices; stamps and numbers materials; maintains inventories.
- Assists students in locating materials as needed; promotes student understanding of library operations and materials; may read to students and/or assist with enrichment activities such as STAR, AR, Battle of the Books and book fairs, conduct activities as delegated by librarian.
- Maintains records, files, lists, catalogs, collections, shelves, backups, documentation and other data; and prepares other reports as necessary.
- Responsible for tracking fines for damaged and lost library materials and textbooks. Generates fines, overdue and classroom checkout reports.
- Monitors student behavior in the library to promote appropriate student behavior; corrects behaviors and maintains discipline according to established policies and procedures.
- Coordinates AV equipment for the school; maintains video library; maintains and troubleshoots a wide variety of audiovisual and technology equipment. Assists teachers with equipment problems; tapes materials for teachers as necessary; operates and maintains computers in library; recommends equipment acquisition; coordinates equipment repair.
- Assists librarian in ordering library materials and supplies; prepares purchase order request form and calculates order as requested; maintains supplies as assigned; may communicate with vendors to resolve problems.
- Assists with supervising and training student assistants and may provide grade input as requested. Assists with supervising and training adult volunteers.
- Locates, prepares and/or modifies materials for student and teacher use, enrichment activities and special projects as directed by certificated staff.
- Prepares, duplicates, collates and distributes materials; operates a variety of office equipment, including laminator; prints materials for librarian and teachers as requested.
- Maintains physical appearance of library, display cases and other assigned areas.
- Performs routine book and material repair; cleans AV equipment as necessary.
- May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.

GENERAL SUMMARY
This position's responsibilities are to assist the librarian or certificated library media specialist with instructional and non-instructional activities for students by assisting in the operation of a school library. Responsibilities include overseeing circulation systems, processing books, periodicals, materials and equipment, assisting students and staff, and providing a variety of additional support. Maintaining records and preparing reports, as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Depending upon the individual assignment, the Clerk - Library Media Center may perform all or a combination of the following under the direction of a certificated librarian:

Reports to the school principal; receives direction from a library media specialist as assigned.
MENTAL DEMANDS
May experience frequent interruptions. Required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities or with a wide range of physical or emotional disabilities. May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students and adults.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students. Exposed to student noise levels. Required to lift and position equipment (not to exceed 40 pounds), books and supplies. Occasional prolonged exposure to visual display terminal. Required to bend, kneel and climb low stepladder.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, including two (2) years of experience working with school age children or in a library or office setting. Library training or experience strongly preferred.
Allowable Substitutions
Vocational training as a library clerk or technician may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis; and, such other alternatives to the above qualifications that the district may find appropriate and acceptable.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated skill in reading, writing and communicating. Knowledge of library procedures. Knowledge of audiovisual and computer equipment operation. Ability to deal with students in a warm and confident manner. Ability to remain flexible to changes in assignment. Ability to organize activities. Ability to follow and give instructions. Ability to be fair and consistent when working with students. Knowledge of effective behavior management techniques. Ability to recommend and compile library orders. Ability to operate a computer and learn the operation of library management system, word processing and database skills. Ability to input, track, and monitor data. Ability to identify and correct problems with computer and audiovisual equipment and perform minor repairs and adjustments.
Keyboarding skill. Ability to operate general office machines. Ability to locate and recommend library materials appropriate to teacher assignments and student learning levels. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.
Licenses/Special Requirements
Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan.
