The Chief of Manufacturing Engineering role sits within the Manufacturing Engineering (ME) function in Submarines and reports directly to the Head of Manufacturing Engineering, as part of the Performance and Improvement function.
ME involves several complex and high integrity processes, therefore a thorough understanding of the ME processes and deliverables, a proven track record operating in a high-pressure ME leadership position and good knowledge of nuclear products & process’s is essential.
The role is accountable for developing, delivering, and assuring the capabilities needed to deliver Submarines key objectives today and tomorrow across the various ME delivery business units.
The role encompasses procedure development and simplification for a range of tasks including new product introduction, process capability sustainment and process improvements to meet product quality requirements, as well as resolution of day-to-day issues in a timely manner and governance of key manufacturing engineering processes (change control, method development and verification).
RR Submarines is currently going through a period of growth, most noticeably preparing for increases in both factory throughput, product drumbeat (as we head towards SSNR) as well as diversification into future novel programmes. What you will be doing:
With this exciting opportunity your main responsibilities will include:
- HSE – Responsible for ensuring that all manufacturing processes and methods of manufacture deployed are in full compliance to Health Safety and Environmental standards and meet the expectations of the Zero Harm programme.
- Product Safety – Responsible for ensuring that product safety risks are understood and mitigated to meet the required safety levels and reduction in process safety risks so far as reasonably practicable.
- Quality – Ensure that ME processes and methods of manufacture are developed, deployed, and controlled to support quality objectives and right-first-time targets. Provide technical assurance and ensure compliance to all relevant company legislative and technical policies and standards.
- Planning – Deploy mechanisms to ensure ME process deliverables are met, report the status, and ensure any issues and risks are resolved to support project timescales and requirements. Manage and assure the resource load/capacity plans across the entire ME population.
- Develop and Deploy capability – develop new Manufacturing and ME capability for a wide range of ME disciplines. Maintain/govern the deployment of processes to ensure ME compliance and ultimate delivery of Manufacturing processes or methods of manufacture that meet the design intent and the requirements for quality, cost, delivery rate and lead time. Provide appropriate levels and priority of technical support to operations such that the needs of the business are met
- Create strategy – Integrate Manufacturing Technology, Digital Manufacturing and Product Introduction activities across the Submarines business. Ensure alignment across ME activities both internal and external to the business.
- As Submarines ME lead on capability ensure the effective governance on all engineering process, related technical changes and compliance to design intent and engineering standards. Working with the other RR Capability leads to ensure cross-business collaboration and knowledge sharing.
- Develop Talent – Responsible for self-development as well as acting as a professional leader of the ME community, leading the Nuclear competency assessment and expectation ensuring the required competences are in place. Drive accountability and enablement through engagement and coaching. Lead and ensure appropriate resource movement across the various ME teams.
- Promotes engagement that empowers people & teams to operate “at their best” to achieve high performance & Gallup strategies.

To be successful in this role you will need to meet the following criteria:
- Professionally qualified Engineer (UK minimum BEng degree or another national equivalent).
- Has led significant projects/activities across a range of Manufacturing Engineering organisations.
- Experience working in a nuclear ME environment preferred.
- Operational/delivery experience in a senior ME leadership role & demonstrated track record of leading high performing teams with technical authority.
- General awareness of Manufacturing Systems (CAD, CAM, CAPP, Manufacturing Execution
- System, Manufacturing Intelligence, SAP, Technical Publications, etc.) relevant to the business.
- Broad experience of complex manufacturing change e.g. facility re-design, facility move, technology insertion, new product introduction, process simplification.

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place.
Due to the nature of work the Business conducts and the protection of certain assets a person has to be a UK national or in MoD approved cases a Dual National from a non ITAR country.
