About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Lockheed Martin team in Havant, Hampshire as the Chief Engineer for the New Medium Helicopter programme.

The UK Ministry of Defence is conducting a competitive acquisition programme for a New Medium Helicopter (NMH) to replace various in-service platforms and provide a sophisticated battlefield utility helicopter with extensive interoperability and ISTAR capabilities. Lockheed Martin is bidding a well-established, proven battlefield helicopter into NMH. The programme is about to enter a formal Invitation to Negotiate proposal phase, with contract start anticipated in early 2024.

This position is for the open selection for the Chief Engineer for the delivery of Lockheed Martin’s NMH programme, including aircraft NMH-specific configuration design, production, delivery, acceptance, certification, training and support. Subject to successful outcome of the competition, Lockheed Martin UK will be the prime contractor and Co-ordinating Design Organisation for NMH, with delivery taking place in the latter half of the decade. There will be close collaboration with UK teammates for defined scopes of work, and with Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky Aircraft Company product team in the US.

This role is for the overall technical lead for this opportunity. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their vision for the programme, including:
  • Leading Engineering team delivery formation and evolution, collaborating across Lockheed Martin business units and teammates
  • Leading the management and delivery of customer and derived requirements and emergent changes
  • Responsibility for system design finalisation and implementation
  • Overseeing of in-country system and software development, integration and test activities
  • Defining the Integration and Test strategy including implementation of facilities, processes and innovations
  • Engaging with existing and planned suppliers for final design, production, delivery and support
  • Close and effective partnering with customers and key industrial partners
  • Leading the finalisation and implementation of strategies for airworthiness, safety, security, design assurance and certification, within LMUK’s role as NMH Coordinating Design Organisation
  • Responsible for Whole Weapon System coherence including training solutions, deployed and in-house support products, design/development/integration/test facilities, production and operational support facilities
  • Leading effective cross-functional business delivery including whole-programme digital execution in accordance with Lockheed Martin’s 1LMX strategy
  • Supporting the customer to deliver and optimise the full set of Defence Lines of Development
  • Ensuring alignment of internal and third party strategies, technologies, products and investment opportunities
  • Ensuring coherence with wider customer programmes and initiatives along with additional company opportunities

You will be primarily based in our Havant offices with regular travel to our partner/customer sites in the UK including the NMH Main Operating Base at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.

The successful candidate will have an extensive background in defence aerospace, with leadership experience in a military air systems delivery and production environment.

  • Significant senior technical leadership experience on major military aerospace programmes
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering processes and practices and tools, particularly in a digital development environment
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and inspire an engineering team and provide direction to subsidiary leads to achieve technical objectives and solutions. Including the ability to manage tasks and priorities to ensure that assigned workload is delivered when required
  • Understanding of UK military air systems certification processes
  • Understanding of air systems production, modification and support processes
  • Positive attitude, and ability to inspire and challenge team members and external partners to deliver the vision
  • Strong communication skills, and the ability to communicate complex issues with a wide range of audiences in a clear and concise manner

Desired skills, qualifications and experience
  • Experience as a Chief Engineer on a major military air platform
  • Degree in engineering or other technical subject
  • Experience of UK battlefield helicopters or other Rotorcraft
