Primary Purpose of the Role:

To carry out Network Architect / Engineering activities as required by the business.
With the support of other members of the team, carry out network architectural and / or network detailed design tasks associated with designing for the sub-sea environment; specifically the design, configuration, test and troubleshoot of network configurations within a system or interconnected subsystems.
Architect only - act as technical lead for network related aspects of projects.

Principal Relationships:
Line Management reporting to the Portfolio Hardware Engineering Manager ASW Inboard (Cheadle Heath).
Actively take steps to learn from other members of the engineering and project teams.
Share knowledge and experience with other members of the engineering and project teams.
Communicate progress and issues with the Work Package / Project / Solution Engineering / Hardware Engineering Manager for the allocated tasks. Keeping Team Leader informed of challenges, successes, risks and issues.
Exhibit Leadership@Thales behaviours when working with other Stakeholders.

Responsibilities and Tasks:
The role may include, but is not necessarily limited to the following activities:
Network Engineer

  • Satisfy the requirement set through design and development activities.
  • Implement the network architecture in physical form, fit and function.
  • Define the Network Test and Acceptance Specifications.
  • Demonstrate compliance to the requirements set through integration, verification and validation activities including production of Test Reports and certificates. Network Architect / Engineer
  • Develop and agree a Work Package Plan and Schedule with the relevant xEM and then take responsibility for completion of the assigned Work Package tasks in accordance with the Plan and Schedule, requesting assistance as needed.
  • Carry out network engineering activities in a team / multi-stakeholder / multi-discipline environment.
  • Support colleagues working in the Thales team throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Work collaboratively with Production (Industry) and Procurement departments to produce cost effective, manufacturable and testable hardware solutions.
    • Work collaboratively with the software teams to capture the needs, integrate and test the solution
    • Provide support to the preparation of detailed estimates and bids (if required).
    • Provide support to Production (Industry) as required, e.g. respond to Problem Reports and Change Requests.
  • Provide support for trials and integration as required.

Performance Indicators against Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Monitor compliance of designs against system / subsystem derived and allocated requirements.
  • Monitor performance against agreed commitments to time (schedule), cost (budget) and quality (Thales QMS).
  • Measure performance against individual objectives in accordance with the company check-in and assessment system (permanent staff only).

Skills


Essential
  • 5+ years of experience in LAN/WAN administration (engineer)
  • 10 years of experience in LAN/WAN architecture (architect)
  • Good all-round technical Networking Knowledge / Project Engineering background.
  • Designing IP based Networks.
  • Network security, using ACLs, Statefull Firewalls and Stateless Firewalls
  • Solid understanding of the TCP/IP protocol stack
  • Solid understanding of the ISO protocol stack
  • Understanding of Layer 3 routing protocols including OSPF and Multicast PIM
  • Linux experience (command line/scripting)
  • Requirements Management and Development Skills.
  • General understanding of Engineering Development lifecycles.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Proactive “can-do” mentality
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Microsoft Office suite experience
  • The individual will be expected to demonstrate a level of autonomy.
  • A logical approach to problem solving is required.

Desirable
  • DOORS
  • Cisco accreditation or equivalent
  • Knowledge of Multi Vendor operating systems
  • JIRA

Experience:

Essential
  • Strong relevant experience of the Skills listed above or associated experience that can be applied to network architecture and design.
  • Design / specification of equipment suitable for 19” rack / cabinets and associated copper / fibre network interconnections (cabling and connectors).
  • Full engineering lifecycle experience (Capture, Design, Implementation, Test).
  • Working with requirements in a structured and evidential manner.
  • Production of Design / Test Specifications and Configuration Records.

Desirable
  • Understanding of Naval platforms, standards and equipment practices.
  • Key areas of design undertaken for which previous experience would be beneficial will include:
    • Designing to meet platform specific EMC and environmental requirements.
    • Product based engineering.

Essential o HNC / HND / Degree

Desirable o Chartered Engineer or equivalent
