Job description
About the role
The BSU workshops provide support to students studying courses in Bath School of Design and Bath School of Art, Film & Media, but also more broadly across the university. Our Locksbrook campus provides a range of opportunities to develop technical support in our exciting areas of ceramics and sculpture.
As a Technician you will join an outstanding team of practitioners offering specialist support to students and staff across the School. In the Ceramics Technician role your main duty will be to work with staff and students in supporting specialist technical and practical processes, within three dimensional design (ceramics) to support our academic programmes at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In particular this will mean working closely with the BA Creative Arts Practice, BA Fine Art, MA Design: Ceramics courses, but also other courses who may use ceramics in their studies.
This role also will help the University to continue expanding its approach to cross-disciplinary activity by providing specialist ceramics and sculpture support for all areas of the Schools to access.
Using your technical and practical skills, you will be able to support the teaching and learning of our students in a range of ceramics skills.
About you (requirements)
You will have knowledge and experience of working within ceramics, and particularly familiar with relevant ceramics processes. You will hold an NVQ4, NEBSS or Degree in a relevant practical subject or you will have relevant professional experience in a specialist area.
You will be IT literate and able to provide technical support for practical ceramics and sculptural processes, and provide advice to students and staff within workshop facilities, and to work with students and staff in the safe and effective use of workshop facilities to support learning. You will also be able to work with Technical Demonstrators and academics to support individuals or groups of students on ceramics techniques to support lecturing and individual project work, including students using workshop facilities for project work. You will have strong communication skills, a keen interest in higher education and you should be able to evidence a proactive approach to development and safety in the campus workshops. Flexibility, as well as the ability to work effectively on your own and as part of a team, is essential.
