Cardiff University is looking to recruit an experienced, reliable, and highly motivated Carpenter as a member of the Estates & Facilities Fabric team. As a member of our team, you will be required to undertake carpentry work across residential and academic buildings across the University Estate including planned, preventative, and responsive maintenance.

Carpenters play a proactive role within an enthusiastic and innovative team, delivering key objectives to meet directorate and university wide requirements. Ensuring all installation and repairs are undertaken for all statutory, planned and breakdown and that all works are completed safely, cost effectively and to the agreed KPI’s and Service Level Agreement.

Salary: £24,715 - £28,929 per annum (Grade 4)

Job Description

Main Duties
  • Responsible for installation and repair on a wide range of building fabric components and equipment (Internal & external) repair of structural components, Building equipment repairs, ironmongery renewals & lock repairs, key, automatic doors (Mechanical parts), security locking maintenance, door repairs and installation, fire doors & all associated components, installation of fixed storage, repairs to fixed furniture in student accommodation i.e. desks and drawers etc.
  • A good understanding of the safe operation of woodworking machinery and routine PPM inspections
  • Works generally unsupervised to undertake the majority of tasks and repair work using own judgement to effect repairs/solutions within capability.
  • Assist other staff within the department on reactive and planned maintenance.
  • Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and procedures, including task specific risk assessments and method statements, in the carrying out of maintenance and adaptation work, reporting any potentially unsafe working.
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork required both manually or electronically, are completed accurately and in a timely manner in line with SLA’s. This includes work requests, PPM schedules, stores requisitions, allocation of hours and any other required for legislation or safety purposes.
  • To attend, as identified and by agreement, development, and training courses to keep abreast of new industry best practice and statutory regulations.
  • Ensuring all statutory, planned and breakdown works are completed safely, cost effectively and to the agreed KPI’s and Service Level Agreement.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Departments and outside bodies as required.
  • Manage critical and essential material vehicle stock levels and follow the universities procurement process in place orders with preferred suppliers to establish best value.
  • Maintain personal tools, equipment, and vehicles, taking responsibility for the safe keeping of these. Complete regular checks on vehicles to ensure it is in good condition.
  • To carry out such duties as are required and are commensurate with the level of this post.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria
  • Hold a recognised apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification.
  • Demonstrate experience of working within a reactive maintenance environment with substantial, relevant post apprentice experience.
  • Demonstrate the safe operation of Woodworking machinery in a workshop environment.
  • Good understanding of job specific General Health and Safety in the workplace including risk assessments and method statement
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently to achieve overall team goals and the ability to prioritise tasks
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions using initiative to investigate and diagnose problems and to escalate as required at the appropriate level
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate appropriately with customers and other departments
  • A valid driving license is necessary as it is a condition of employment that all personnel are able to utilise the fleet of University vehicles to reach all University sites.

  • Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral

Additional Information

This is a full-time open-ended position of 35 hours per week. Hours of work normally be 0800 to 1600, with one hour for lunch.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment and will be worked as and when reasonably requested. No regular level of overtime work is guaranteed.
  • The Estates & Campus Facilities department operates a formal stand-by and call-out rota, where you will be required to participate in this scheme as part of your duties. Payment is made when on these duties.
  • To undertake any other duties as from time to time may be required commensurate with the grade of the post
  • To be available to attend annual Health Surveillance assessments.
