Job description

1. Share with other staff in meeting the personal care needs of residents in a way that respects the dignity and privacy of the individual and promotes independence and choice.

2. Assist in securing and sustaining the home for the residents, and promote a caring environment through the highest standards of professional practice, conducive to the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual needs of the residents.

3. Assist the Directors, Home Manager and other Care Assistants to ensure that each resident receives person-centred care appropriate to his or her individual need.

4. Carry out instructions in accordance with the residents’ care plan under the supervision of senior staff.

5. Carry out other duties as and when required by any person to whom you report.

6. Work to an agreed schedule and rota.

1. Report to Senior Carer.

2. Report to the Home Manager.

Principal Responsibilities

Resident Care

1. Assist residents who need help with dressing, undressing, bathing and toileting.

2. Help residents with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including incontinence; help in use and care of aids and personal equipment.

3. Care for residents who are temporarily sick.

4. Help care for residents who are terminally ill.

5. Help in the promotion of mental well-being and physical activity of residents through positive conversation, taking them out, sharing with them in activities such as reading, writing, hobbies and recreations.

6. Participate in the development of activities for residents in which they can join and which will enhance their quality of life.

7. Inspect, launder and mend residents’ clothing where permission has been granted.

8. Serve meals to residents, assist in the feeding of residents who need help, and prepare light meals when catering staff are not on duty.

9. Report on each resident for whom you have been responsible to the Senior Person in charge of the shift at the end of each shift and be present and participate in the handover procedure.

10. Deal with and report minor accidents in accordance with the First Aid policy and Accident Reporting Procedures.

11. Assist residents who need reassurance and comfort.

Staff Matters

1. Help to ensure that all staff contribute to the best of their ability in order to maintain the efficient running of the Home and, where necessary, raise any concerns about these to those listed in the Reporting Lines.

2. Assist the Directors, Home Manager, and Senior staff to ensure that there is good communication with and between staff.

3. Attend and participate in staff meetings and in staff training as and when organised.

4. Participate in the handover procedures at the end of your shift, ensuring that all details are passed on.

5. Act in a positive manner that encourages good practice, team working and professionalism, and positively influences the behaviour of staff and the care of residents.

Premises

1. Advise the Directors and Home Manager of any malfunctions of the heating, lighting, domestic appliances or emergency systems, ensure the security of the premises, and enter such details in the Repair Book.

2. Help ensure that internal and external cleanliness and appearance is to the highest possible standards.

3. Make and change beds; tidy rooms and do light cleaning; empty commodes; flush and disinfect sanitary ware.

4. Answer emergency bells; answer door; greet visitors in a polite, courteous and professional manner.

Health & Safety

1. Act at all times in accordance with health & safety legislation and guidelines, and ensure that all health & safety and management policies are applied consistently.

2. Learn and understand your responsibilities towards yourself, the company and other people in relation to Health & Safety.

3. Take appropriate precautions when using hazardous substances, such as wearing protective clothing and gloves, and taking great care to lock away all hazardous substances.

4. Ensure that fire exits are kept clear and fire doors are not impeded from closure.

5. Check equipment before use and operate it safely and in accordance with company policies.

6. Support the Home Manager in his/her duties as the “responsible officer” for the Home under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Fire Regulations.

Records

1. Assist the Home Manager and senior staff to maintain such log books and records as may be required by the registering authority or the senior management team.

2. Update residents’ files with daily handover reports.

Other

1. To ensure the aims and objectives of the home are applied at all times

2. To ensure that all complaints are referred to the Registered Manager promptly, and to assist in their resolution

3. To undertake any other duty within reason that may be required from time to time under the direction of the Registered Manager

4. To go about all duties in an environmentally responsible manner, aiming to use resources effectively and efficiently, including taking measures to minimise waste of energy, water and consumables, and reducing unnecessary or inefficient travel

5. To maintain confidentiality in all matters regarding:

a. Business developments, decisions and actions taken by the Senior Management Team

b. Staffing issues such as salaries, recruitment, redundancy, promotions, complaints, disciplinary, resignation or dismissal

c. Residents, their families or representatives.

6. To assist in ensuring that the Home is presentable, warm, friendly and professionally run at all times, that visitors are welcomed and that all requests for information are dealt with promptly.

7. To ensure that personal conduct when engaged in work activities both inside and outside the home reflect positively and professionally on the Home and the Group in general.

8. To comply at all times with the requirements for safeguarding the vulnerable adults in our care, and to be proactive in ensuring that residents, staff and visitors are safe from abuse, bullying, harassment, discrimination or racism, and are treated with dignity and respect
